🖐Our hands are remarkable tools of connection, creation, and daily survival that we often take for granted.
✌️Each hand has 27 bones, 29 joints, and over 120 ligaments. Your palms hold about 17,000 touch receptors that feel pressure, texture, and temperature.
🫱Arthritis in the hands is very common, with around 83% of adults aged 65 and older in SA suffering from osteoarthritis. Stats show about 50% of women and 25% of men develop hand osteoarthritis by the time they reach their 80s, but it can show up earlier due to early joint wear, hormonal shifts, repetitive overuse, injuries, genetics, or autoimmune factors that trigger inflammation. It frequently affects the small joints of the hands and wrists and typically targets the base of the thumb and the knuckles.
🤛Hand and wrist mobility, light strengthening work, together with gentle myofascial release, can help keep your hands healthy and manage hand arthritis by reducing stiffness and improving function.
👉Gentle mobility work and strengthening movements keep the joint cartilage lubricated, reduce stiffness, and build support through the muscles around the joints. Moving the wrist and fingers through their pain-free range of motion stimulates the production of synovial fluid, which will improve overall hand function and movement. Gentle myofascial release on the forearm muscles and hand connective tissues eases tightness, improves circulation, and lowers pain perception.
✊❗️️Important
Movements should not cause sharp or lasting pain. Warm-ups are important – warm water or a heating pad can help ease pain before exercising. Mild, temporary discomfort while stretching is normal, but keep it gentle – increased swelling or sharp joint pain is a signal to stop.
🫶💙 Today, take a moment to thank your hands and all that they do for you.
