Have you ever had your foot go completely numb after sitting cross-legged for too long? 👀 Now, imagine that feeling never going away…
That is the daily reality for some patients and earlier this year, Dr M.G. du Preez performed a peroneal and tibial nerve release to fix exactly that 🦵
The peroneal and tibial nerves are the two main “electrical cables” ⚡️ that travel down your leg to power your foot and ankle. As they pass behind the knee and around the ankle, they squeeze through tight tunnels of muscle and tissue. Sometimes those tunnels get too tight and the nerve gets pinched (think of it like when you step an pinch a garden hose).
Why does this happen? 💡
- Swelling from diabetes or other conditions
- Injuries, scar tissue, repetitive strain
- Weight gain or fluid retention that adds pressure
- Simply the way some people are built anatomically
What symptoms do people often feel?
- Pins & needles, burning, or numbness in the foot
- Trouble lifting the toes, leading to tripping and stumbles
- Weakness, cramping or shooting pain down the calf
- That frustrating “my foot feels asleep” sensation
👣
In this particular case, Dr du Preez carefully opened up those tight tunnels and freed the trapped nerve, giving it room to breathe again 😮💨.
This is a rather challenging surgery, requiring very careful work, as the nerve and surrounding vessels can be damaged without the proper expertise.
If this sounds familiar to you or a loved one, don’t just “walk it off”. These symptoms are mostly treatable and early detection makes a big difference ☀️
