Perimenopause can bring many changes, and sometimes it's hard to know what's normal and what isn't.

Hot flushes, poor sleep, anxiety, brain fog, weight changes, irregular periods... There are so many questions women have during this stage of life.

Did you know that a UTI in older women can sometimes present as confusion or delirium rather than the usual urinary symptoms?

Left untreated, a bladder infection can progress to a kidney infection or even sepsis.
To help prevent UTIs:
💧 Drink plenty of water
🥛 Include probiotic-rich foods in your diet
🌸 Consider low-dose vaginal oestrogen cream after menopause, which may help reduce recurrent UTIs

If you notice sudden confusion in an older loved one, a UTI could be the cause.

Did you know that PCOS has been renamed PMOS?

PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
The new name better reflects what we now understand about the condition. It affects much more than the ovaries, including hormones and metabolism throughout the body.

Same condition. Better understanding.

I have been a doctor for long enough to know that it changes you. It teaches patience, humility, and resilience, but most of all, it teaches you how to be present with people in moments that matter most.

I still feel grateful that I get to do this work in Somerset West, alongside my team, my patients, and people like Dr Bryer who are finding their own place in medicine.

It has always been my passion to be a doctor. And it still is.
