๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’™ Nystagmus Awareness Day: 20 June

Nystagmus is a condition that causes the eyes to move involuntarily. These movements may be side-to-side, up-and-down, or circular, and can affect vision, depth perception, reading, and daily activities.

While nystagmus is not usually curable, many people can achieve better vision and quality of life through appropriate treatment, support, and regular eye care.

Management options may include:
๐Ÿ‘“ Glasses or contact lenses
๐Ÿ” Low vision aids and visual support
๐Ÿฅ Treating any underlying eye or medical condition
๐Ÿ’Š Medications in selected cases
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Eye muscle surgery for suitable patients
๐Ÿ“š Educational and workplace accommodations

The good news is that many people with nystagmus live full, active, and successful lives.

Today, we raise awareness, encourage understanding, and celebrate the resilience of those living with nystagmus.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ’ง Ever wondered why your eyes water when you yawn?

Itโ€™s actually completely normal!

When you yawn, your facial muscles tighten and your eyes may squeeze shut for a moment. This can put pressure on the tear glands and temporarily affect how tears drain through the tear ducts.

The result? Tears may build up and spill over โ€” making your eyes water.

Yawning also helps lubricate the eyes by spreading tears across the surface, which keeps them moist and comfortable.

So next time your eyes water during a big yawnโ€ฆ your eyes are just doing their job ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

Hypertension doesn't just impact your heart and blood vesselsโ€”it can also damage the delicate blood vessels in your retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye.

In many cases, there may be no symptoms in the early stages. As damage progresses, some people may experience:
๐Ÿ”น Blurred vision
๐Ÿ”น Reduced vision
๐Ÿ”น Floaters or dark spots
๐Ÿ”น Headaches

The good news? Regular eye examinations can sometimes detect signs of high blood pressure before you notice any changes in your vision.

LASIK vs PRK: Which is right for you?

Both LASIK and PRK are proven laser vision correction procedures designed to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. While both aim to achieve the same goalโ€”clearer visionโ€”they differ in how they are performed and how the eye heals afterwards.

The "best" procedure isn't the same for everyone. Your prescription, corneal thickness, lifestyle, occupation, and overall eye health all play a role in determining which option may be most suitable.

The first step is a comprehensive assessment with your ophthalmologist to determine whether you are a candidate for laser vision correction.

๐Ÿ‘“ Freedom from glasses could be closer than you think.

๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Why do our eyes water?

It might seem strange, but watery eyes are not always caused by "too many tears." In fact, they are often a sign that your eyes are irritated or dry.

When your eyes become irritated, they may produce extra tears as a protective response.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Healthy tears help keep your eyes comfortable, clear, and protected.

๐Ÿšญ Did you know that smoking can affect more than just your lungs?

Your eyes work hard for you every day but smoking can impact their health and may increase the risk of certain eye conditions over time, including cataracts, dry eyes and age-related eye disease.

The good news? Positive changes can make a difference. Looking after your overall health can also help support your vision.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Healthy habits. Healthy eyes.
