👶🏻Colostrum is the first drop of milk that a newborn baby gets when breastfeeding for the first time ever.

Remember, only about a teaspoon (5ml) is enough to keep them full for about 1 to 3 hours in the first few days, as they feed frequently to stimulate milk production.

⚡Tip: A newborn’s stomach is about the size of a marble or hazelnut on day one, holding only 1–2 teaspoons, making small, frequent feeds ideal.

🤱🏾Breastmilk contains all the nutrients a baby needs. It is:

-Easy to digest.
-It has antibodies.
-It quenches their thirst, so water or tea is not needed for babies aged 0- 6 months.
-It makes the baby full, so there’s no need to feed porridge or other solid food before they turn 6 months.

💡Remember, it is important to burp your little one after breastfeeding. If babies are not burped, they can easily be uncomfortable and end up crying nonstop.

📘If you need help with breastfeeding tips, how to help your baby latch or suckle, please read page 6 of your Road to Health Booklet. You can also ask a nurse at your next checkup if you're worried about your baby not getting enough breast milk.

What do you need to know before delivery?

By the end of your first antenatal visit, you should have a delivery plan in place to keep you and your baby safe.

Your plan should include:

📅 Knowing your dates of duration of pregnancy and your expected date of delivery or labour.

🏥 Having your Maternity Case Record, which contains your antenatal card. Please note that the outside of the Maternity Case record indicates where you will give birth (clinic or hospital).

👶🏽 How you are likely to deliver (vaginal or caesarean).

👩🏽‍⚕️ Who will assist your delivery (midwife or doctor.

💊 Your pain relief options.

🚗 A transport plan for emergencies or when labour starts (with important contact numbers).

Remember, you can also bring a birth companion of your choice whom you trust (it can be your partner, an aunt, a friend, or a traditional birth attendant).

Prepare for the baby receiving bag (Vest, Crawler, socks, 2-3 Pampers, Wrapping blanket, woollen cap) and know the danger signs of pregnancy for emergencies (These are on the first page of the Maternity Case record).

Important to also know:

✔️ It’s safest to give birth in a health facility by a health care professional.
✔️ If your HIV status is unknown, you will be tested at delivery
✔️ If you are HIV positive, your baby will be tested at birth

Planning helps reduce stress and prevents delays. Speak with your healthcare provider and plan your delivery early.

🍎 Healthy Snacks for Growing Children
As your baby gets older, they may need small meals or snacks between regular meals. These snacks should be easy to prepare, nutritious, and suitable as finger foods.

🥕 Healthy snack ideas include:
Fresh fruit, unsweetened yoghurt, full cream milk, brown bread with peanut butter, amadumbe, carrot sticks, tomato wedges, or orange-fleshed sweet potato.

Remember, healthy snacks are not the same as commercial snack foods like sweets, biscuits, and chips. These are highly processed, low in nutrients, and often contain too much salt, sugar, unhealthy fats, and other harmful ingredients. These are not suitable for young children. These contribute to health problems such as obesity in children, and also diabetes and high blood pressure later on in life

💛 Choose snacks that nourish and support your child’s growth.

👶🏾Today, we commemorate .

🟥Some babies are born with birth defects, health conditions that happen while the baby is developing. We can’t prevent all birth defects, and most importantly, they are nobody’s fault.

🟥Most birth defects happen very early in pregnancy, often before you even know you’re pregnant. Nothing you did or didn’t do causes most birth defects.

🟥Regular antenatal visits, newborn check‑ups, and early childhood screening can help identify conditions early so babies get the care they need to thrive.

🟥Taking folic acid, avoiding alcohol and smoking, managing infections, and eating well can reduce some risks, but they cannot prevent all birth defects.

👶🏻Every child can learn, grow, and flourish with love, support, and access to care.

🧑🏼‍🍼Today, we honour all parents and caregivers raising children with special health needs.

Listen up, mommy! We know times are tough and jobs are scarce.

If you are not working or do not earn enough money every month to buy your baby clothes and other important items, you may qualify for the CHILD SUPPORT GRANT (CSG). If you do qualify, you can get the child support grant from when your baby is born.

You must get it as early as possible, as this will help support the baby’s development.

These are the things you need to bring when going to apply for a child support grant at your nearest SASSA centre:

🪪Your ID card
📃Your Child’s Birth Certificate. Remember, you must register your baby's birth before they turn one month old.
📄A police affidavit that states that you are unemployed or do not earn enough money.

Please remember that only the caregiver who stays with the child will be allowed to apply for the Child Support Grant.

Visit the SASSA website for more information https://www.sassa.gov.za/
