We didn’t just walk 5K, we took steps for something bigger.

Today, we came together to celebrate Physiotherapy Week 2026 and shine a light on stroke awareness.

Every step, every conversation, every bit of awareness raised brings us closer to a community that recognises stroke, responds quickly and supports recovery.

From our starting line to the finish, we walked together, learned together, laughed together and celebrated the incredible impact of movement and rehabilitation.

Stroke changes lives. Together we can
change the story.

This evening, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital CEO, Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, visited the Accident & Emergency Unit as part of her ongoing walkabouts to engage with staff, assess service delivery and understand the patient experience.

The Accident & Emergency Unit is often the first point of contact for patients seeking urgent care, making it a critical part of the patient journey. From the moment a patient arrives, every interaction matters.

The visit provided an opportunity to engage with healthcare professionals on the frontline, identify challenges and reinforce our commitment to providing safe, compassionate and quality healthcare to every patient.

This Deaf Awareness Month, we embrace the international theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights” and shine a light on the importance of inclusion, accessibility and the right to communicate.

The Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Speech Therapy and Audiology Department marked the occasion with an awareness march using South African Sign Language (SASL), one of South Africa’s official languages.

The march was more than just a celebration, it was a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to be heard, understood and empowered to communicate.

And the conversation doesn’t stop here! Throughout the week, our team will continue focusing on patient advocacy through support groups, empowering patients to know their rights and take an active role in their healthcare journey.

Communication is a right. Inclusion is for everyone. Let’s keep the conversation going! 🤟🏽
