SANCA Soweto - Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Centre

SANCA Soweto - Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Centre SANCA Soweto is a non-profit organization that was established in 1980 by SANCA JHB to rehabilitate those who are abusing drugs, alcohol & inhalants

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) Soweto Treatment Centre is non-profit organization that was established in 1980 by SANCA Johannesburg. It came into existence as a response to growing problems of Substance Abuse in Soweto. The population growth of Soweto, the prevalence of drugs, the demand for substances treatment programmes and political evolution made

the organization to be available to render its services for harm reduction and fighting substance abuse within the community

In 2005 SANCA Soweto got its autonomy from SANCA Johannesburg and now independent under the affiliation of Sanca National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. SANCA Soweto has a rich tradition of developing Programmes for addicted children and adults and also addressing substance abuse in the early stages of addiction. Our role is to rehabilitate those who are abusing drugs, alcohol and inhalants and focus on all sectors of society, as addiction knows no barriers to aspects such as class, age , race or gender.

[Yesterday Was A Historic Moment]

Soweto comes to a buzz as Department of Social Development together with Gauteng Department of Social Development host the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT), observed annually on the 26th of June.

The event will also serve to officially launch the state-funded and newly established Tladi Day Clinic Treatment Centre, which is managed in collaboration with the South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (SANCA) Soweto branch.

This year’s event will be observed under both the UN 2026 theme: ā€œWorld Drug Problem: Persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses ā€, and the SA theme: ā€œBreaking the cycle: Restricting alcohol availability to children, youth and pregnant womenā€.

Both themes demonstrate global and South Africa’s determination and commitment in achieving the set goal of achieving an international society free of drug and alcohol abuse.

The themes also seek to promote and put more emphasis on evidence-based intervention on prevention, treatment and recovery from substance disorders.

Gauteng Province is reported as one of the top five provinces in the country in the scourge and use of illicit substances.

A Message from the Director to All Fathers - Happy Father’s Day ā¤ļø

Today, we pause and honor you.
To the fathers of Soweto and beyond - biological dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, and the men who show up as father figures: We see you.

Fatherhood isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s the 5am wake-ups. The school fees you stress over in silence. The ā€œI’m fineā€ when you’re tired. The way you teach your kids to be tough on the outside, but keep your heart soft on the inside. That’s real strength.

At SANCA Soweto, we work with many families touched by substance use. And we’ve learned this: kids don’t need perfect fathers. They need present fathers. Fathers who listen. Who apologize. Who choose them, even on hard days. You showing up makes all the difference.

If fatherhood feels heavy right now, know this: asking for help is not weakness. It’s leadership. Our doors are open for counseling and support - for you, and for your family. You deserve care too.

So today, take a moment. Breathe. Let your kids hug you extra tight. Let yourself be celebrated.

From all of us at SANCA Soweto, Happy Father’s Day. Thank you for being the foundation, the protector, and the love our community needs.

With respect,
Ms Zakithi Nsele
Director, SANCA Soweto
