βοΈπ Why Do Your Ears Pop on an Aeroplane? πβοΈ
Ever wondered why your ears suddenly feel blocked, full or βpopβ during take-off and landing? Itβs all about air pressure! π€οΈ
As the aeroplane climbs or descends, the pressure in the cabin changes. Your Eustachian tubes help balance the pressure between your middle ear and the outside environment β and that little POP is often a sign that the pressure is equalising.
π‘ Try these simple tips when flying:
π Swallow or yawn regularly
π§ Sip water
π¬ Chew gum or suck on a sweet
π Gently equalise the pressure β donβt force it
πΌ For babies, feeding during take-off and landing may encourage swallowing
Most ear popping settles on its own. However, if your ears remain blocked after your flight, you experience significant pain, or you notice a change in your hearing, itβs a good idea to have your ears checked. πβ€οΈ
