Ever feel like your body has a mind of its own? Mood swings, weight changes, irregular periods... it might not just be stress or lifestyle. It could be your hormones. Oestrogen and progesterone play a powerful role in your body.
♀️ Fluctuating hormones can trigger anxiety, low mood, or irritability — especially before your period or during perimenopause.
♀️ Hormonal imbalances can affect how your body stores fat and how hungry you feel.
♀️ Irregular or painful periods often signal that your hormones might be out of balance.

If you’re noticing changes that don’t feel “normal,” don’t ignore them. Hormonal health is key to your overall wellbeing — and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪? A missed period doesn't always mean a pregnancy. 🩸

While pregnancy is one of the most common reasons for a missed period, several other factors can affect your menstrual cycle and cause your periods to become irregular—or stop altogether. Some possible causes include:
◾ Stress: Emotional and physical stress can disrupt the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle, sometimes causing periods to become irregular or absent.
◾ Significant weight loss: Restricting calories or losing weight rapidly can affect ovulation and interfere with normal menstrual function.
◾ Excess body fat: This can lead to hormonal imbalances, particularly increased oestrogen levels, which may affect your cycle.
◾ Intense exercise: High levels of physical activity can place stress on the body and impact hormone production, sometimes leading to missed periods.
◾ Certain contraceptives: Some forms of hormonal contraception, including the injection, hormonal IUD, and progestogen-only pill, can cause periods to become lighter or stop completely.
◾ Perimenopause and menopause: As oestrogen levels naturally decline with age, periods often become less regular before eventually stopping.
◾ Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS): A common hormonal condition that can interfere with ovulation and cause irregular or absent periods.

Your menstrual cycle is an important indicator of your overall health. If you've missed three consecutive periods, or if your cycle has changed significantly without an obvious reason, it's worth discussing with your gynaecologist. Understanding the cause is the first step towards protecting your health. ♀️

An estimated 21% to 39% of South African women experience depression, while postnatal depression affects up to 32% of new mothers.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Yet many women silently carry the weight of stress, anxiety, depression, or emotional exhaustion while caring for others. ♀️🧠

This Mental Illness Awareness Month, take a moment to check in with yourself. If feelings of sadness, hopelessness, overwhelm, or persistent fatigue are affecting your daily life, know that support is available. Make time for the things that bring you joy, prioritise rest and self-care, stay connected to loved ones, and don't hesitate to seek professional help when you need it. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it's an important step towards healing, resilience, and overall wellbeing.
