Today we mark World Ophthalmologist Day — a day that recognises the role of eye specialists in preserving one of our most precious senses. 👁️

Ophthalmologists do far more than prescribe glasses. Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, is caused by prolonged screen use and affects a growing number of people who work at a computer for extended periods. Common symptoms include eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision and difficulty focusing.

Adjusting your screen brightness, maintaining proper posture and taking regular breaks can all help reduce strain — but persistent symptoms should be assessed by a professional.

Myth: Eating carrots will improve your eyesight. 👁️

Fact: Carrots contain vitamin A, which is important for general eye health — but eating them will not improve your vision beyond what is normal for you, nor will they correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism.

A balanced diet supports healthy eyes, but it is not a substitute for corrective lenses, surgery or regular eye examinations when these are needed.

That's often what patients describe after cataract surgery — not just clearer vision, but richer colour, sharper contrast and a level of night vision they had forgotten was possible. A cataract develops so gradually that most people don't realise how much they've adjusted to a dimmer, hazier version of the world — until it's gone.

Not everyone's eyes face the same UV risk — and most people don't know where they fall. 👁️

Light-coloured eyes, certain medications and older cataract surgery lenses can all significantly increase your sensitivity to UV damage — even when you think you're being careful.

Know your risk. Protect your eyes accordingly.

Ever heard of snow blindness? It's more common than you'd think. 👁️

Photokeratitis — known as snow blindness — happens when the surface of the eye is essentially sunburnt by UV rays reflecting off snow and ice. Symptoms include intense eye pain, redness, watering, light sensitivity and a gritty, sandy feeling, often appearing hours after exposure.

The good news is that it's temporary and usually resolves within a day or two — but it can be genuinely painful and is entirely preventable.

Heading to the slopes these school holidays? Wraparound sunglasses or snow goggles are a non-negotiable, not an extra.
