Maybe you're not chasing flexibility or the perfect pose. Maybe you just want to move well, feel capable, and keep doing the things you love, for years to come.

That's what functional yoga is about here: understanding your body, moving with purpose, and building strength for real life - not just for the mat.

Because the goal was never to become a better yoga student. It's to become more confident in your own body.

If that sounds like you, you're in the right place.

15 years of teaching, and this course still shifted something. There was no long list of muscles to memorise, but I now have a deeper appreciation for the incredible body we all live in.

And I hope that by becoming more aware in my own movement, I can help my students become more aware in theirs. Because understanding your body is where better movement begins.

Thank you to the team at Heart & Bones for creating such a thoughtful course that has challenged me to look at movement with fresh eyes. Here's what has stuck with me most.

Balance isn't about standing on one leg, perfectly still. It's about teaching your brain that it's safe to wobble and, through lots of tiny adjustments, find its way back to centre.

So next time you balance, don't fight the wobbles. Embrace them. That's where the learning happens.

Two simple movements. Big payoff for your shoulders and your breath.

Scapular retraction (pulling your shoulder blades together) and protraction (moving them forward) activate your serratus anterior — the muscle that keeps your shoulder blades secure against your ribs. Smoother movement, every time you reach overhead or forward.

But it's not just about your shoulders. A mobile scapula means your back ribs can flare and rotate properly on an inhale. More room for your lungs to fill.

Stiff shoulder blades? You end up breathing into your upper chest instead — overworking your neck and shoulders just to get air in.

Not just a shoulder drill. A breathing drill. A stability drill. Try it seated, kneeling or standing — a few slow rounds, paying attention to your breath as you go.

More on the breath-shoulder connection (and the fall that taught me this the hard way 🐒) on the blog — link in bio.

Every time you reach into a cupboard, wash your hair or put luggage into an overhead locker, you're asking your shoulders to work as a team.

Healthy shoulder movement isn't just about flexible shoulders.

It's about co-ordination and it's about strength.

It's about your shoulder blades, upper back and rib cage all doing their part.

That's what we're practicing in yoga - not just flexibility, but the skill of moving well.

But when you look at everything your body is actually capable of, and you may want to change your mind.

Your body breathes without you thinking about it. It constantly repairs and adapts. And your body was made to move in so many different ways.

That's why I teach the way I do.

Every class includes movement patterns that relate to daily life, helping you build a body that supports the life you want to live.

Because yoga isn't just about moving better on the mat. It's about moving well for life.

Trying to force your hands to your feet often leads to a rounded spine, a collapsed chest, and unnecessary strain.

The aim isn't to push your body into a shape. It's to understand where your body can move today.

When you stop chasing the biggest stretch, you create space to notice what's actually happening in your body.
And that's where meaningful movement begins.

The real work isn't in the poses. It's in the transitions between them.
It's easy to chase the next shape - get to the pose, hold it, move to the next one. But the transition is where the real work happens: your core activating, your breath guiding the movement, your balance being tested as your weight shifts.
Skip the transition, and you skip all three.
Swipe through - then next time you're on the mat, notice what's happening between the poses, not just in them.

Downward Dog asks your shoulders to do the same movements as reaching up to put something on a high shelf, hanging the washing, or lifting your suitcase into the overhead locker.

More playing, inspired from going through the applied anatomy course.

Stability isn't the absence of movement - it is the ability to control movement.

As I shift my weight and change my base of support, my body has to organise itself without using my hands. Plenty of wobbling, but that's good for the brain and the nervous system. The skill is finding my balance again.
