There is something freeing about letting go of the version of people we have created in our minds. When we stop focusing on who someone should be and become curious about who they actually are, conversations change. Relationships deepen. Our understanding grows.

At OTGrow, we have learned that some of life's most meaningful moments happen when we pause our assumptions, listen more carefully, and allow others the space to show us their unique perspectives, strengths, and stories. Perhaps the real opportunity isn't to change others, but to be fully present with them.

This week, who could you listen to with greater openness and curiosity?

How do you help group members check in with what they are experiencing especially when finding the words isn’t always easy?

In this week’s OTGrow video, Louise shares a creative check-in idea that was introduced to her by another therapist during an advanced group therapy course.

It’s a simple idea, but it opens up some fascinating possibilities for reflection, self-expression and group discussion. It also brings an interesting projective element into the group in a way you may not have considered before.

Could this be something you could adapt for one of your groups?

Watch this week’s OTGrow video - https://youtu.be/HYgktBU0n0I - to hear Louise share the idea and explore how you might use it in your own group facilitation.

And if you have your own creative ways of using everyday technology in group therapy, we’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Happy facilitating!

Tip of the Week 💜💚

Don’t Ref the Group. Facilitate It

When conflict shows up in a group, it’s tempting to jump in and decide who’s right and who’s wrong. But what if your role isn’t to be the referee? Instead, bring the focus back to the here and now: “What’s happening in our group right now?” “What are we noticing in this moment?”

By handing the situation back to the group, you create space for self-reflection, insight, and shared understanding. Often, the most meaningful solutions emerge when group members make sense of the experience themselves.

As therapists, our job isn’t always to have the answers. Sometimes it’s to ask the right questions.

Happy Facilitation!

Those who care for others often do so instinctively.

We give a little more, stay a little longer, and carry a little extra because we genuinely want to help. But there is an important difference between caring and carrying. In group therapy and mental health practice, we are most effective when our support comes from a place of balance rather than depletion. Generosity does not require self-sacrifice. Compassion does not require us to take on what belongs to someone else.

Perhaps this week offers an opportunity to pause and notice: Where are you caring? And where might you be carrying? Take a moment to check in with yourself. Protect the energy that allows you to keep showing up. Remember that caring for yourself is not separate from caring for others.

What helps you maintain healthy boundaries while supporting others? Share your thoughts below.

Tip of the Week 💜💚

The most powerful learning moments don't always come from new content. Sometimes they come from revisiting a story, experience, or insight that has already been shared. As a facilitator, are you intentionally drawing on examples and personal experiences from previous discussions?

Bringing these into the present can strengthen connections, reinforce learning, and help group members see their own growth and progress. This week, challenge yourself to revisit a meaningful example from your group's journey.

How can you use it to spark reflection, deepen understanding, or encourage participation? We'd love to hear from you: How do you bring past discussions and experiences into the here and now to enrich your groups?

Share your tips in the comments.

Sometimes the hardest part of growth is giving ourselves permission to bud.

In one group, a participant shared that they worried about shining too brightly because others might become jealous. When they tested that belief with the group, the response was unanimous: Bloom. Shine. Grow. What a powerful reminder that growth is not a limited resource. One person's budding does not take anything away from anyone else. In fact, it often inspires others to begin budding too.

As facilitators, we have the privilege of creating spaces where people can discover that their growth is welcomed, encouraged and celebrated. This week, who can you encourage to bud, bloom and step into their potential?

Share an example of a moment when you witnessed one person's growth inspire others in a group.

What happens when we give the group space to talk to each other rather than always looking to the facilitator for the answers? Every group brings together different experiences, perspectives and ways of seeing the world. Sometimes, creating the right opportunity for discussion can unlock something that the facilitator could never provide alone.

But what does that look like in practice?

In this week’s OTGrow video, Louise explores inviting discussions and shares some thought-provoking examples of what can happen when group members are given the opportunity to learn from one another.

You may find yourself thinking differently about the next time you facilitate an activity, ask a question or notice two very different perspectives emerging in the room.
