My colleagues, Lara Rust, Chantele Taljaard, and I have created a preventative Gender Based Violence (GBV) programme targeted at adolescent boys to empower and encourage them to take action individually and within their communities to change the narrative in our society and stop violence against women and children. Whilst there are many programmes available that are focused on empowering women and girls, our aim is to build a positive foundation with the young men of South Africa.

Before qualifying as a Registered Counsellor, I was a volunteer counsellor at R**e Crisis Cape Town Trust, working with survivors of GBV. This life-changing and life-giving work often left me wondering: "What is being done at grassroots level? How are young men being mentored and challenged to resist and fight against what seems to be a societal norm in our country?" And this is where we believe our programme fits in.

It has been an absolute honor working alongside my fellow colleagues in creating such a programme. At the end of April 2024, we were blessed to have had an opportunity to implement a trial run of our programme with a group of boys at the Durbanville Children's home.

We are excited and look forward to seeing how we are able to take this further, praying that the right doors will be opened for us, for this programme and most importantly that we are able to make a contribution towards eradicating the scourge of GBV in South Africa.

It will be run once a week (for 2 hours) over a 6 week period. Each session will cover different psychosocial aspects that long covid sufferers may be experiencing.

Please note that we are registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders, so participants will be able to claim from their medical aid if group sessions are covered by their plan.

Prioritise your mental health by BUILDING A SUPPORT STRUCTURE.

Research has shown that having a social support system can have a positive impact on your mental health. Surround yourself with people you trust, who you can confide in and ask for advice when you face challenges, a crisis situation or when you have to make difficult decisions.

NATURE & CONNECTION ...

Did you know that engaging your 5 senses can help to relieve anxiety & stress? Spend some time outdoors & engage your senses:

5 things you can SEE
4 things you can HEAR
3 things you can TOUCH
2 things you can SMELL
1 thing you can TASTE

Meaningful CONNECTIONS with others can boost your mood and enhance your general emotional & physical wellbeing. Spend time with your favorite people or be intentional to connect with others in a positive, friendly manner.

"Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."
- Mother Teresa

Bringing NATURE & CONNECTION together... invite someone along to share an outdoor activity with you. Research also shows that interacting with animals can reduce stress & anxiety, so if everyone is too busy, then just spend some time outside with your pet 🙂

BE PRESENT to your environment and to each other and you will always find something to add to your gratitude journal 💗
