What happens at your first chiropractic appointment?

Your first appointment is a chance for Dr Caileen Walker to get to know you, understand what has been bothering you, and look at what may be contributing to your pain or discomfort.

She will chat to you about your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and the activities that may be affecting how you feel. This is followed by a gentle physical assessment, which may include checking your posture, movement, joint function, muscle tension, and any tender areas.

Once the assessment is complete, Dr Walker will talk you through what she has found and discuss the best way forward for your individual needs.

You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, so you can feel comfortable, informed, and supported throughout the process.

Low back pain is not always about one wrong movement. Often, it is the result of how we live day to day.

Too much sitting, too little movement, poor lifting habits, stress, fatigue, and weak support muscles can all add up over time.

Looking after your back is not just about treatment. It is also about regular movement, strength, posture, recovery, and paying attention before small niggles become bigger problems.

**Tension headache or migraine?**

A tension or cervicogenic headache often starts in the neck and feels like a dull, tight ache that can spread into the head or behind the eyes. It is often linked to neck stiffness, posture, stress, or muscle tension.

A migraine is usually more intense and may come with throbbing pain, nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or visual disturbance.

If your headaches seem to begin in the neck, it may be worth having it assessed.

Plantar fasciitis and Comrades season!

As we get closer to Comrades, many runners start to notice pain under the arch of the foot, especially with those first few steps in the morning or after time on their feet.

This may be plantar fasciitis, a common overuse condition that can flare up when training load increases.

Early attention matters. Ignoring it can make running, walking, and recovery far more uncomfortable.

If you are noticing nagging arch or heel pain during your build up, it is worth getting it checked before race day gets any closer.

**Self care tip, neck pain**

If you are experiencing acute neck pain and cannot access treatment right away, trigger point release can be a helpful way to manage discomfort.

Use a tennis ball, or a similar firm ball, against a wall to apply direct pressure to a tight or tender area. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute, especially if you notice referred pain.

Follow this with gentle stretching to help ease tension.

Be gentle, and stop if symptoms increase.

How to recognise a frozen shoulder

A frozen shoulder often starts gradually and becomes worse over time.

Some common signs include:

โ€ข Struggling to lie on the affected side
โ€ข Pain when lifting the arm
โ€ข Progressive stiffening of the shoulder joint
โ€ข Difficulty doing basic activities like brushing your hair or getting dressed

If your shoulder is becoming more painful and restricted, it may be more than a simple strain.

If these symptoms sound familiar, it is worth having it assessed early.
