Lower limb dressing - one of his goals was to re-learn how to put his sandals on, this is one of the techniques used to put on socks and shoes.

Dressing is not as simple as you think. It requires gross and fine motor coordination, bilateral coordination, body awareness, right/left discrimination, postural stability and motor planning. After having a traumatic brain injury, all the skills listed above may be affected/impacted resulting in a re-learning of functional tasks to achieve independence and boost confidence.

Proper anatomical positioning for persons with a stroke is very important. The aim is to promote optimal recovery by modulating muscle tone, providing appropriate sensory information, promote body awareness, help regain motor control, prevent complications such as pressure sores, contracture, pain, respiratory issues and assist safer eating.

TYPES OF STROKE
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, or when there is a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. This prevents blood and oxygen from reaching the brain's tissues. Without oxygen, the brain cells and tissue become damaged and begin to die within minutes.

🧠 HAEMORRHAGIC STROKE (13%)
Is caused by a weakened blood vessel (aneurysm and arteriovenous malformations) that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue. The two types of haemorrhagic strokes are intracerebral (within the brain) hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage.

🧠 ISCHEMIC STROKE (87%)
Occurs when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. Fatty deposits lining the vessel walls, called atherosclerosis, are the main cause for ischemic stroke. Fatty deposits can cause two types of obstruction : 1. Cerebral thrombosis (blood clot) that develops at the fatty plaque within the blood vessel. 2. Cerebral embolism is a blood clot that forms at another location in the circulatory system, part of the blood clot breaks loose, enters the bloodstream and travels through the brain's blood vessels until it reaches vessels to small to let it pass.

🧠 TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (12%)
Is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. They are sometimes called mini-strokes because their symptoms last only for a few minutes up to 24 hours before disappearing. Since it doesn't cause permanent damage, it's often ignored. But this is a big mistake as it often foreshadows a full-blown stroke and needs to be taken seriously.

WHAT IS NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION?

It is designed to help treat clients with nervous system or neurological diseases. Rehabilitation aims to increase function, reduce debilitating symptoms and improve a client's quality of life.

This process is based on the notion of neuroplasticity. In physiology, plasticity means a change in the central nervous system due to information (stimuli). The brain is not hardwired, but changes throughout life due to experiences and impressions; new connections are formed continuously between neurons - we learn. This learning or relearning is the central object of rehabilitation, even many years after e.g. a stroke.

Under the care of an occupational therapist, neurological rehabilitation will consist of supporting and facilitating the client to be as independent as possible in their daily life. This may involve improving reduced cognitive functioning and removing physical barriers to independence through well designed assistive device's, technology or equipment. Intervention is goal orientated and focused around maximizing and enabling independence, no matter what form this may take.
