Iron deficiency affects nearly twice as many women as men worldwide — and yet it remains one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in women’s healthcare and in my practice.
As women, we lose iron every month. And during the perimenopause transition, many women lose even more due to heavier and more irregular bleeding. This is rarely picked up because most doctors aren’t checking ferritin at all, let alone against an optimal reference range. And don’t get me started on our nutrition or rather, lack thereof.
You can have a “normal” result and still be functionally deficient. Normal on paper. Depleted in your body.
This is exactly the kind of thing an integrative medicine consultation looks at properly.
