Zambia Records Measles Outbreak With 119 Confirmed Cases

By Mark Ziligone

Zambia has recorded a measles outbreak, with 119 laboratory‑confirmed cases out of 700 suspected cases reported between January and June this year.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi said Western Province has recorded the highest number of suspected cases, followed by Lusaka, North‑Western, and Southern provinces.

Dr. Lishimpi explained that most confirmed cases involve children with unknown or incomplete vaccination histories, highlighting gaps in immunisation coverage.

He told journalists at a press briefing that Government has activated the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response and strengthen surveillance in affected districts.

Meanwhile, World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative Dr. Otipo Shikanga commended Government for openly declaring the measles outbreak, saying Zambia’s transparency demonstrates its commitment to protecting public health and enables timely interventions to control the disease.

A patient refused to remove a badly decayed tooth because, according to him, "God gave me 32 teeth. I must return 32."

It was explained to him that the tooth was beyond saving. But he walked away.

Three weeks later, he came back with his neck swollen and couldn't sleep.

He had fever, he couldn't swallow, his tongue was elevated, and he had breathing difficulties and couldn't close his mouth.

Now he had to be admitted and we eventually removed the same tooth he had been protecting all along.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL IS USELESS IN SNAKEBITE?

‎Activated charcoal is sometimes used in cases of poison ingestion because it can absorb toxins in the stomach before they enter the bloodstream.

‎In Snakebite, it is useless wether ingested or applied on the bite site.
‎It has no role in snakebite treatment. Venom does not enter the stomach and charcoal is not absorbed into the body, it simply passes out in stool.

‎The only proven treatment for serious snake envenomation is antivenom administered by trained medical professionals.

‎If you or someone else is bitten by a snake, do not waste time with activated charcoal. Get to a health facility immediately where doctors can provide the right treatment based on your symptoms

MONTELUKAST — THE TABLET MANY PEOPLE TAKE WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT DOES

Many people have used Montelukast before.

Some think it is an antibiotic.

Others think it is just another cough medicine.

But Montelukast is neither.

Montelukast is an anti-allergy and anti-asthma medicine that works by blocking chemicals called leukotrienes.

These chemicals contribute to:

• Wheezing

• Nasal allergies

• Sneezing

• Runny nose

• Airway inflammation

WHAT IS MONTELUKAST USED FOR?

• Asthma control

• Allergic rhinitis

• Persistent nasal allergies

• Prevention of exercise-induced asthma symptoms

IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW

Montelukast is usually a TABLET, not a cough syrup.

It is commonly taken once daily, often in the evening, as directed by a healthcare professional.

IT IS NOT A RESCUE MEDICINE

If someone is having an asthma attack, Montelukast will not provide immediate relief.

It helps control and prevent symptoms over time.

SIDE EFFECTS

Some people may experience:

• Headache

• Stomach discomfort

• Dizziness

• Sleep disturbances

• Strange dreams

• Mood changes

If unusual behavioral or mood changes occur, speak with a healthcare professional.

PUBLIC ADVICE

Do not use Montelukast simply because someone says it helped their cough.

Not every cough is caused by allergies or asthma.

The right medicine should be used for the right condition.

Health education saves lives.

.*TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS (T1DM)🩸🌡️*
_*What Is Diabetes Mellitus Type 1?*_ 🤔

*DESCRIPTION...✍🏻*
🫴Is an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells resulting in absolute insulin deficiency.
🫴In genetically predisposed individuals, viral infections trigger the development of autoantibodies against beta cells of the pancreas.
🫴Type 1 DM may exist together with other autoimmune conditions in autoimmune polyglandular syndromes
🫴Autoimmune diabetes includes Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood *(LADA);* diagnosed in slender adults.

*RISK FACTORS*
• Presence of genes HLA DR3 or HLA DR4
• Caucasian race
Viruses (Rubella, enteroviruses, coxsackie B4, mumps virus, Epstein-Barr virus, rotavirus, and
cytomegalovirus) are said to be the main triggers in genetically predisposed persons.

*INVESTIGATIONS*
• Anti-Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) 65 antibodies
• Anti-islet tyrosine phosphatases 2 (IA2) and 1A-2β
• Islet cell autoantibodies
• Insulin autoantibodies
Anti-zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) antibodies

HIV breakthrough removes need for daily pill

(The Telegraph) HIV patients can be drug-free for up to two years under a treatment that ends the need for daily pills.

A new antibody cocktail has been shown to successfully suppress the virus in a trial led by Imperial College London.

Currently, people with HIV must take antiretroviral therapy (ART), which is not a cure but stops the virus from making copies of itself, allowing the immune system to repair and preventing the progression to Aids.

The new treatment is a mixture of two broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs) – specialised immune proteins that latch on to viruses or bacteria, acting like a physical shield to stop them entering cells.

In a randomised controlled trial involving 68 people, 75 per cent of participants were able to stop their ART for at least five months, while about half maintained viral control for one year and a quarter for two years.

The team now wants to study the people who lasted the longest to see if they can replicate – or even extend – the effects for everyone.

‘New possibilities’

Prof Sarah Fidler, of Imperial College London, said: “This is the first time a bNAb-based therapy has demonstrated viral load control of this duration and magnitude in a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

“These results open new possibilities for HIV treatment and bring us closer to our goal of finding a cure.”

Not all cough syrups are the same.

⛔ Any syrup containing Dextromethorphan or Codeine is used for dry cough.
⛔ Syrups with Dextromethorphan or Codeine are not safe for patients with asthma.

⛔ Any syrup containing Bromhexine or Ammonium Chloride is used for productive (wet) cough.
⛔ Syrups with Bromhexine or Ammonium Chloride are not safe for patients with gastric ulcers.

⛔ Any syrup containing Antihistamines is not safe for patients with prostate problems.

⛔ Any syrup containing Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine, or Phenylephrine is not safe for patients with hypertension or diabetes.
⛔ These same ingredients (Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine, Phenylephrine) are classified as pregnancy category C, so they should only be used under medical supervision during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

⛔ Any syrup containing Theophylline is not safe for patients with heart disease or hypertension.

⛔ Any syrup containing Salbutamol is not safe for patients with heart disease or hypertension.

⛔ Any medicine containing Ammonium Chloride can increase ammonia levels, making it unsafe for patients with liver disease or kidney failure (e.g., Avibet, Farcolin).

Bottom line: Always match the cough type and patient condition before choosing a cough medicine.
