The Christian Blind Mission (CBM) global team has commended Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital (KTEH) for its innovative, effective, and inspiring delivery of eye health services.

Dr. Tendai Mwale, the Senior Medical Superintendent of Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital, hosted the CBM delegation which was led by CBM Zambia Country Director Dr. Linda Kasonka, alongside Mbacke Niang, Director of Global Programme Development and Implementation, and Bright Ekweremadu, Global Head of Programme Implementation.

During their visit, the delegation toured several core sections of the facility, including the operating theatre, outpatient department (OPD), spectacle section, and pharmacy.

Dr. Mwale highlighted the profound impact of the hospital's workforce, sharing how the dedicated staff at KTEH have successfully treated and saved numerous children and adults presenting with severe eye illnesses.

They also witnessed a live telemedicine session under the " Vision for Tomorrow: Advancing eye healthcare through Digital technology in Zambia Health Project being implemented by KTEH in partnership with Else Kröner-Fresenius-Foundation (EKFS) and Christian Blind Mission (CBM).

The project leverages digital technology to bridge the gap in access to eye care services by linking patients in remote satellite locations with specialists at the tertiary referral hospital.

BFHFI AND IPCHS TRAINING STRENGTHENS BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT

Health workers are being equipped with knowledge and practical skills to protect, promote and support breastfeeding through the Baby-Friendly Health Facility Initiative (BFHFI) and Integrated People-Centred Health Services (IPCHS) training.

The training covers key breastfeeding practices, including early initiation, skin-to-skin contact, rooming-in, proper positioning and attachment, counselling skills, management of breastfeeding difficulties, and support for mothers and babies in special situations.

The IPCHS component strengthens the approach by ensuring that care is respectful, coordinated and centred on the needs of mothers, babies and families—from pregnancy and childbirth through to the community.

The five IPCHS principles include engaging and empowering communities, strengthening governance and accountability, reorienting the model of care, coordinating services across sectors, and creating an enabling environment.

Together, BFHFI and IPCHS ensure that every mother receives consistent, quality and compassionate breastfeeding support throughout her care journey.
