LABOUR DAY 2026 |MAINA SOKO MEDICAL CENTRE CELEBRATES ZAMBIA'S WORKFORCE

Today, Maina Soko Medical Centre proudly stood with the nation to mark International Labour Day 2026, under the theme: “Securing Zambia’s Future of Work: Protecting Jobs, Skills and Pensions for Decent Work for All.”

Alongside nearly 100 institutions from across the public and private sectors, we joined Her Honour the Vice President, Dr. W.K. Mutale NALUMANGO, as she reaffirmed Government’s pledge to uplift workers’ welfare and protect the future of Zambia’s workforce. Calling workers “the backbone of the nation’s economy,” the Vice President reminded us that national progress rests on their dedication and on our shared commitment to lifelong skills, adaptability, and decent work for all.

At Maina Soko Medical Centre, that vision lives in our wards, theatres, and training rooms every day. As a common-user facility serving both our military and civilian communities, we know that quality healthcare demands people who are ready, disciplined, skilled, and cared for. That’s why we keep investing in our team — through continuous training, mentorship, and capacity building — so our staff can meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s challenges with confidence.

We believe decent work starts with a safe, fair, and respectful environment. It grows through teamwork, wellness, and professionalism. And it shows in the compassion our staff bring to every patient, every shift.

So this Labour Day, we say thank you. To every nurse, doctor, medic, technician, administrator, and support staff member at Maina Soko and across Zambia: your service secures our nation’s health and its future.

We remain aligned with Government’s aspirations - strengthening our people, strengthening our care. Because securing Zambia’s future of work begins with supporting those who serve.

Happy Labour Day to all workers. Your dedication moves Zambia forward.

Quality Healthcare, Our Ultimate Goal.

Maina Soko Medical Centre Hosts Minister of National Defence of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Official Visit

Maina Soko Medical Centre was privileged to host the Honourable Minister of National Defence and Veterans Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Guy Kabombo MUADIAMVITA, accompanied by the Secretary General of Defence, Major General Lukwikila Metikwiza MARCEL, and a distinguished delegation.

The visit was undertaken to foster mutual learning and to gain insight into the Centre’s operations, systems, and institutional values. On arrival, the delegation received a dignified welcome, including honours rendered by a mounted Quarter Guard.

Commandant Maina Soko Medical Centre, Brigadier General (Dr.) Levy MUCHEMWA, presented an overview of the institution’s history and development. He noted that the Centre traces its roots to 1960, when it was established as an annex maternity wing to the University Teaching Hospital. It evolved into a fully-fledged military hospital around 1979, in response to the needs of personnel during the liberation period in Southern Africa. The institution bears the name of Maina SOKO, a courageous woman whose contribution to the liberation struggle remains deeply honoured.

From serving military personnel and their families, the Centre has grown steadily. A transformative investment in 2018 modernised the facility and expanded capacity from 55 to 250 beds. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, the hospital played a key national role as a designated treatment centre, supported by its oxygen plant and strengthened clinical infrastructure.

Today, Maina Soko Medical Centre is recognised for its advanced surgical capabilities, including procedures such as brain aneurysm surgery. It also serves as an important training site for medical interns and draws professional staff from the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force, and Zambia National Service, complemented by civilian and specialist personnel seconded through the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Health.

The Commandant further shared the Centre’s sustainability approach, which combines government support with internally generated income through the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA), private health schemes, and fee paying services.

In his remarks, Honourable Mr. MUADIAMVITA expressed appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of the Centre’s leadership and staff. He observed that the institution’s progress reflects a clear commitment to service, healthcare excellence, and humanity.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of the facility, led by Deputy Commandant, Colonel Patson BANDA.

On the 28th of April, we pause to honour Kenneth Kaunda Day. It is a quiet moment to remember the enduring values of our First Republican President, a leader who placed human dignity, unity, and service at the very heart of national development.

At Maina Soko Medical Centre, a multi user facility serving both military personnel and civilians alike, we strive to carry that legacy forward, gently and faithfully. Our work reaches beyond uniforms and backgrounds, guided by a simple truth that every life matters.

In each ward, in every consultation room, and through all our support services, his ideals come to life in small, steady ways. These include compassionate care for every patient, disciplined and respectful service delivery, and a deep regard for the quiet dignity found in every role across our institution.

Guided by his words, Tiyende Pamodzi ndi Mutima Umozi, let us walk together with one heart. We move as a single team, united in purpose and in our shared commitment to a healthier nation.

As the nation gathers to run in remembrance through the Kenneth Kaunda Marathon, we too continue our own quiet journey, step by step and patient by patient, holding close a legacy of love and care.

Today, we do not merely remember him. We serve, gently and wholeheartedly, in the spirit he lived.

Maina Soko Medical Centre congratulates Capt Mubanga CHANDA, Nurse Specialist in Critical Care; Lt Happy NG’OMBE, Physiotherapist and Adjutant; and Lt Ackim BANDA, Physiotherapist, all serving members of the Zambia Air Force, on the successful completion of the inaugural four-month Rapid Response and Advanced Tactics Force Course at the Parachute and Special Tactics Training School.

This pioneering programme, the first of its kind within the Air Force, represents a major milestone in strengthening internal capacity and advancing operational medical readiness within the Defence Force. It is an in-service professional development course undertaken strictly for the enhancement of military medical capability and should not be misconstrued as a public recruitment exercise.

The rigorous training equipped the trio with advanced competencies in rapid response operations, tactical combat casualty care, and coordinated emergency medical interventions. These enhanced skills will significantly improve ICU critical care response, strengthen physiotherapy-led rehabilitation and sports injury management, and elevate the institution’s capacity to respond decisively and effectively in complex, high-pressure clinical and operational environments.

In a separate development, Maina Soko Medical Centre also congratulates Maina Soko Queens Football Club Assistant Coaches, WOII NKHATA Jabulani and Ms Hellen CHIGULE on successfully completing the Football Association of Zambia E-Coaching Course, an intensive one-week programme sponsored by Maina Soko Medical Centre Management and attended by 67 participants.

The course enhanced modern football coaching competencies through structured modules covering the objectives of the Football Association of Zambia E-License, laws of the game, the four moments of football, field organisation, coaching methodology, session planning and delivery, small-sided games, and child safeguarding.

Collectively, these achievements reflect the institution’s sustained commitment to continuous professional development, multidisciplinary excellence, and the strengthening of both medical and sporting capacity in service to the nation.
