Understanding Cataract: Restoring Sight, Restoring Lives 👁️✨
Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness globally, and Zambia is no exception. A cataract occurs when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision, glare, difficulty seeing at night, and eventually, total blindness if left untreated.
👨🏽⚕️ Who is at Risk?
Cataracts are most commonly found in older adults, but they can also occur in younger individuals due to:
1. Injury to the eye
2. Diabetes
3. Prolonged exposure to sunlight (UV rays)
4. Smoking
5. Certain medications such as steroids
🩺 How is Cataract Treated?
The only effective treatment for cataract is surgery. During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery is safe, quick, and highly effective, often taking less than 30 minutes.
✅ The Benefits of Cataract Surgery:
1. Clearer, sharper vision
2. Improved independence and quality of life
4. Better mobility and reduced risk of falls
5. Restored ability to work or carry out daily activities
