BUILDING ZAMBIA'S PHARMACEUTICAL FUTURE STARTS AT HOME

During the 2026 Agricultural and Commercial Show, ZAMMSA Director General Mr. Liyoka Liyoka reaffirmed the Agency's unwavering commitment to advancing local pharmaceutical manufacturing through the Positive Discrimination Policy.

The Director General emphasized that ZAMMSA will continue to prioritize the procurement of medicines and medical supplies from compliant local pharmaceutical manufacturers, creating opportunities for Zambian companies to grow, innovate, and compete while meeting the highest quality standards.

By supporting local production, Zambia is taking meaningful steps towards:

✅ Strengthening national health security.
✅ Reducing dependence on imported medicines.
✅ Creating employment and empowering local industries.
✅ Retaining value within the country's economy.
✅ Building a resilient and sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

The Director General also encouraged local manufacturers to continue investing in quality, increased production capacity, and compliance with international standards, while calling upon all stakeholders to work together in transforming Zambia into a competitive pharmaceutical manufacturing hub.

ZAMMSA Restores Dialysis Supplies Nationwide

We are pleased to confirm that ZAMMSA has restored the supply of essential dialysis materials to health facilities across the country. Following recent disruptions, we moved quickly to source alternative supplies and worked closely with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to ensure timely delivery. Our priority was to protect patients and ensure that life-saving dialysis treatment continues without interruption.

We understand how critical this was for kidney patients, their families, and our health workers. To prevent a recurrence, we are strengthening our planning systems, improving stock management, and enhancing collaboration with partners across the supply chain. These steps will help us maintain consistent availability of dialysis consumables in all facilities that provide renal care.

The Smart Health Systems team from the United Nations Development Programme, together with the Ministry of Health, ZAMMSA, ZESCO, Kiyona Energy and REA, paid a courtesy call on the Copperbelt Provincial Health Office in Ndola.

The team is on the Copperbelt this week to conduct an assessment of the hybrid solar PV and battery energy storage systems at the ZAMMSA Luanshya Hub, as part of the wider solarisation of health facilities across Zambia.

During the courtesy call, the team met with Dr. Christopher Dube, Public Health Specialist, who thanked UNDP for the support.

Dr. Dube noted that power challenges had previously significantly affected data management, resulting in backlogs. Work schedules had to be adjusted to align with power availability, and some facilities were unable to conduct certain procedures. He described the ongoing solarisation as a transformative intervention for health service delivery.

"The solarisation initiative is a significant step forward," Dr. Dube said. He noted that solar systems are being rolled out in many health facilities and commended the effort. He further urged health institutions to consider net metering and called for increased sensitization to enable facilities to better understand and manage their electricity needs.

UNDP Representative, Ranya Sherif, added that solarisation is part of the overall scope which includes net metering. An assessment will be conducted to check for compatibility to ensure net metering can be implemented.

The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has successfully concluded the National Forecasting and Quantification Exercise for Essential Medicines, Medical Supplies and Family Planning Commodities for the 2027–2029 planning period.

Speaking during the official closing ceremony, ZAMMSA Director General Mr. Liyoka Liyoka commended participants for their commitment and technical expertise throughout the exercise, describing the successful completion of the exercise as a significant milestone towards strengthening the country's health supply chain.

"Over the past 14 days, you have demonstrated exceptional professionalism, teamwork and dedication in developing evidence-based forecasts that will guide the procurement and distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies across the country. I sincerely thank each one of you for your valuable contribution. The work you have accomplished here will have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the Zambian people," Mr. Liyoka said.

The Director General further urged stakeholders to remain committed as the country moves into the implementation phase, emphasizing that accurate forecasting and quantification are critical to preventing stock-outs, minimizing wastage and ensuring uninterrupted access to quality health commodities.

Meanwhile, Acting Director of Supply Planning, Mr. Oliver Ng'andwe expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their active participation and commitment throughout the exercise.

"This exercise has once again demonstrated the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders. The quality of the forecasts developed reflects the dedication, technical expertise and shared commitment of everyone involved. We are confident that the outputs from this exercise will support informed procurement decisions and contribute to a more resilient and responsive health supply chain," Mr. Ng'andwe said.

The forecasting and quantification exercise brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, ZAMMSA, provincial and district health offices, healthcare facilities, cooperating partners and technical experts to determine the country's health commodity requirements for the 2027–2029 period.

The exercise is expected to guide national procurement planning and strengthen the availability of essential medicines and medical supplies in health facilities across Zambia.
