Dr. Kachinga Sichizya recently attended to a patient who walked in with severe lower back pain so intense he couldn’t bend, and the pain was radiating down his leg therefore making even walking difficult.

Using a spine model, Dr. Sichizya explained that this kind of pain is often caused by pressure on a nerve in the lower . When a disc or surrounding structure presses on the nerve, it can send sharp pain down the leg.

The first step in treatment is usually pain management, including targeted injections to reduce inflammation and relieve the pressure.

Surgery is only considered as a last option if the pain continues for a long time and worsens.

Have you ever wondered what’s actually causing that pain running from your back down your leg?

In many cases, it’s pressure on a nerve and it is what we call .

The most common cause is a 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 (𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱) 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰. That soft cushion between the bones of your spine can bulge or tear and press on the nerve.

Other times, it’s 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗿 of the , where aging discs and joints narrow the space around the nerve.
