🩵🌍 April is Autism Awareness Month🌍🩵
This month, we shine a light on autism, celebrate neurodiversity, and encourage early recognition and support. Every child is unique, and autism can present in different ways. Knowing the signs can help families seek guidance early. 💙
Possible autism red flags may include:
🗣️ Language differences
Delayed speech, loss of previously used words, echolalia, repeating sounds or phrases, difficulty expressing wants and needs, incorrect pronoun use, or reduced gestures.
👫 Social differences
Variable eye contact, preferring to play alone, difficulty joining conversations, challenges understanding emotions, or wanting friendships but struggling socially.
🔁 Repetitive behaviours
Strong preference for routines, difficulty with change, lining up toys or repetitive play, intense interest in certain topics or activities, and wanting things to feel “just right.”
🎧 Sensory differences
Food selectiveness, sensitivity to noise or crowds, discomfort with hair washing or nail cutting, strong texture preferences, seeking movement or pressure, and stimming such as hand flapping, jumping, or finger movements.
Autism is not something to fear or shame, it is a different way of experiencing the world. With understanding, acceptance, and support, autistic children can thrive.
If you have concerns about your child’s development, speak to a qualified healthcare professional for assessment and guidance. Early support can make a big difference. 💙
