ZFDS AIRLIFTS TWO WCFCB PENSIONERS HOME IN SUCCESSFUL REPATRIATION MISSIONS⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully conducted two air evacuation missions, repatriating pensioners under the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) from the International Hospital of Zambia in Lusaka to their home provinces.

The missions, carried out on 8 and 9 June 2026, saw one pensioner airlifted to Namwala District in Southern Province and another transported to Kitwe on the Copperbelt. Both patients were returning home after undergoing routine medical reviews in Lusaka.

The flights were operated by ZFDS pilots Patrick Kawanu, Chanda Mumpangwe, Elvis Kite, and Siposami Zulu. Paramedic Bwalya Chisanga accompanied the patients throughout the journeys to ensure their safety and medical well-being.

These missions are a direct result of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ZFDS and WCFCB, a partnership aimed at improving healthcare accessibility by reducing the challenges posed by distance for injured and ailing workers.

ZFDS continues to play a critical role in Zambia’s healthcare delivery system by providing emergency medical evacuations and reaching patients in remote and hard-to-access communities through its fleet of air ambulances.

A TIMELY INTERVENTION SAVES A 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM LIFELONG DISABILITY IN MUFUMBWE ⭐️

What began as a devastating motorbike accident could have changed a young girl’s life forever.

During Day 3 of the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) Surgical Outreach Camp at Mufumbwe District Hospital, a 7-year-old girl was rushed to the facility after being struck by a motorbike, leaving her with a serious open leg fracture.

In a fortunate turn of events, a ZFDS surgeon was present and immediately reviewed the case and escalated it for urgent surgical intervention.

Without timely treatment, the young patient faced a high risk of developing a severe bone infection (osteomyelitis), permanent disability, or even losing her limb.

Working together, the ZFDS surgical team and Mufumbwe District Hospital staff quickly prepared the child for surgery. The fracture was successfully repaired, the wound thoroughly cleaned to prevent infection, and the procedure was completed without complications.

Today, the young girl is stable, alert, and recovering well with her mother by her side. Thanks to the swift response and teamwork of dedicated healthcare professionals, her chances of making a full recovery have greatly improved.

This case highlights the life changing impact of bringing specialist surgical services closer to underserved communities. Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference between disability and recovery.

ZFDS DELIVERS 25 SURGERIES DURING IKELENGE OUTREACH⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully conducted a week-long surgical outreach in Ikelenge District, during which 25 life-changing surgical procedures were performed at Kalene Mission Hospital.

Led by General Surgeon Dr. Kelly Makonko, the outreach screened 74 patients, with 25 requiring surgical intervention.

Among the procedures performed were four emergency caesarean sections due to fetal distress and prolonged second-stage labour. The surgical team also successfully carried out a complex exploratory laparotomy and splenectomy on a 42-year-old woman.

Other notable procedures included the removal of calcified cysts from a 69-year-old man and the excision of a submandibular salivary gland tumour in a 65-year-old woman.

A bilateral tubal ligation was also performed on a 32-year-old mother of eight following informed consent and counselling.

Paediatric surgical services were equally done.

Several patients with thyroid-related conditions were assessed but could not undergo surgery due to the unavailability of thyroid function testing during the outreach. These patients have been scheduled for further evaluation during the upcoming medical camp in Kalumbila, commencing on 10 June, where the necessary diagnostic services will be available.

The theatre team comprised Dr. Kelly Makonko (Lead Surgeon), Sapalo Kaluba (Anaesthetist), and Raphael Makosa and Ality Kameya Potter (Scrub Nurses).

This outreach underscores ZFDS’s commitment to bringing specialised surgical services closer to remote and underserved communities, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all.

ZFDS TEAM PROVIDES URGENT TRAUMA CARE DURING MUFUMBWE OUTREACH⭐️

A 24-year-old woman was brought to Mufumbwe District Hospital after being found unconscious with injuries sustained during an incident on a farm.

Upon assessment, the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) medical team identified a deep head laceration and immediately initiated emergency care. A thorough evaluation was conducted to determine the extent of her injuries. The wound was carefully cleaned and dressed to reduce the risk of infection, while appropriate medication was administered to support her recovery and manage pain.

The laceration was successfully sutured by Dr. Chipo Lundu , with assistance from members of the surgical team, ensuring proper wound closure and promoting optimal healing.

Throughout her treatment, the team closely monitored her condition as she regained consciousness, providing attentive and compassionate care. Although her injuries did not require major surgical intervention, the prompt response and clinical expertise of the healthcare professionals played a vital role in addressing her immediate medical needs and supporting her recovery.

At ZFDS, every outreach is an opportunity to bring quality healthcare closer to the people. Through timely intervention, skilled medical care, and a commitment to serving even the most remote communities, we continue to save lives and restore hope where it is needed most.

ZFDS CONTINUES ITS MISSION IN MUSHINDAMO ⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has screened 873 patients across four health facilities in Mushindamo District since the commencement of its medical outreach, bringing much-needed healthcare services closer to communities facing significant barriers to access.

Team Lead Dr. Danny Musongole revealed that the outreach team has attended to over 900 patients so far, with 873 consultations already documented from the four health facilities visited.

According to Dr. Musongole, the most common conditions diagnosed during the outreach were malaria, upper respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections.

He noted that many residents are forced to walk long distances to access healthcare facilities, often delaying care-seeking.

“Bringing the Hospital to the People means closing that gap,” said Dr. Musongole. “When the distance is far , ZFDS steps in to screen, treat, and stabilize patients on the spot.”

The routine medical outreach forms part of ZFDS’ mandate to deliver quality healthcare services to underserved and hard-to-reach communities across Zambia. Screening and treatment activities continue as the team progresses through North-Western Province.

For many communities, healthcare remains a long journey. Through its outreach programmes, ZFDS continues to bridge that distance bringing skilled medical teams, essential treatment, and hope directly to the people who need it most.

A NEW GRIP ON LIFE: ZFDS RESTORES INDEPENDENCE TO MAN IN IKELENGE ⭐️

A surgical team from the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) in Ikelenge District, North-Western Province, has successfully performed a life-changing procedure on a 65-year-old man from the Kalene area, restoring his ability to carry out basic daily tasks after five years of living with a debilitating hand condition.

The patient had been suffering from Dupuytren’s contracture affecting both hands, a progressive condition in which tissue beneath the skin of the palm thickens and tightens, causing the fingers to curl inward and become permanently bent. In his case, the condition is believed to have developed due to a combination of factors, including age, elevated fat deposits in the tissues, and a history of excessive alcohol consumption.

For five years, the condition severely impacted his quality of life. Unable to straighten his fingers, he struggled to perform even the simplest daily activities, including feeding himself, and became dependent on others for care.

His circumstances changed when the Zambia Flying Doctor Service surgical team, stationed at Kalene Mission Hospital, intervened. Dr. Kelly Makonko, a General Surgeon with the ZFDS team, successfully performed a surgical release of the contracted fingers on the patient’s dominant hand. The procedure involved carefully dividing the thickened tissue bands that had restricted movement, allowing the fingers to extend freely once again.

“I am happy. Now I will be able to do things on my own,” the patient said following the surgery at Kalene Mission Hospital.

The operation was supported by a dedicated theatre team comprising Anaesthetist Mr. Kalaba Sapalo, Theatre Nurse Raphael Makosa, and Porter Agness Kasota, who all played vital roles in ensuring the procedure’s success.

ZFDS continues to bring specialist surgical care to remote and underserved communities across Zambia, providing access to essential services that would otherwise be unavailable.

The team’s work at Kalene Mission Hospital is a testament to the transformative impact of skilled and compassionate healthcare, restoring not only physical function but also dignity and independence to those in need.

ZFDS BRINGING HEALTHCARE TO THE HEART OF IKELENGE ⭐️

Nearly one thousand residents across three health facilities in Ikelenge District have received vital medical care through an outreach programme conducted by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS).

The team has so far provided routine healthcare services at Ikelenge Health Centre, Jimbe Health Centre, and Saluzhinga Health Centre, bringing essential medical services closer to communities that would otherwise face significant challenges in accessing healthcare.

One of the key highlights of the outreach was the provision of 93 reading glasses to patients, greatly improving the quality of life for residents whose vision challenges had affected their ability to read and carry out daily activities.

The exercise also revealed several pressing health concerns within the communities. According to Dr. Hastings Sikafuwa, who led the outreach team, there was a high prevalence of malaria cases, alongside a significant number of patients living with sickle cell disease. The team further identified a notable number of children presenting with clubfoot, a condition that requires specialised orthopaedic intervention.

Arrangements are already underway to refer the affected children to Beit CURE Hospital for further assessment and treatment, offering renewed hope to families and improving prospects for the children’s mobility and overall quality of life.

In addition, several cases of cleft palate were identified during the outreach. These patients have since been scheduled for a dedicated surgical camp to be held in the province, where a team of plastic surgeons will conduct corrective procedures.

The outreach underscores the critical role the Zambia Flying Doctor Service continues to play in bridging healthcare gaps and ensuring that quality medical services reach remote and underserved communities across Zambia.

ZFDS AIRLIFTS WCFCB BENEFICIARIES HOME AFTER SPECIALISED TREATMENT⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully conducted a series of air ambulance missions for beneficiaries of the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), facilitating their safe return home following specialised medical treatment in Lusaka.

The beneficiaries were transported from the International Hospital of Zambia (IHZ) to various destinations, including Mufulira and Solwezi, after being discharged from hospital.

The air transfers provided a safe, efficient, and comfortable means of transportation, particularly for patients whose medical conditions made long-distance road travel difficult and potentially risky.

The missions were carried out by pilots Captain Siphosami Zulu and Elvis Kite with medical support provided by paramedics Susan Banda and Salifyanji Nachambwa, who closely monitored and cared for the beneficiaries throughout the flights.

These missions underscore the strong partnership between the Zambia Flying Doctor Service and the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board in promoting the health and well-being of injured workers and pensioners by ensuring access to safe and reliable medical transportation services.

ZFDS remains committed to delivering quality aeromedical services, bridging distances, and enhancing access to healthcare for communities and patients across Zambia.
