Why Don't Teeth Heal Like Bones?
Have you ever wondered why a broken bone can heal, but a cavity can't?
The answer lies in the structure of our teeth.
Enamel, the outermost layer of the tooth, is the hardest substance in the human body. However, unlike bone, enamel contains no living cells. Once it is damaged by decay, wear, or trauma, the body cannot regenerate it naturally.
Bones, on the other hand, are living tissues supplied with blood vessels and cells that continuously repair and remodel damaged areas.
Although saliva can help remineralize very early enamel demineralization, it cannot replace enamel that has already been lost. Once a cavity forms, professional dental treatment is required to restore the tooth.
