June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month. Today, I had the privilege of facilitating a training session for Botswana National Youth Council employees on Men’s Mental Health 🧠💚

This year’s focus is clear: breaking the silence, challenging outdated ideas of "strength," and creating safe spaces where young men can speak without judgment. Because mental health isn’t weakness, it’s a critical pillar of leadership, resilience, and community well-being.

Conversation alone isn’t enough. Action is required.

After the session, I spoke with the programs coordinator about a national drive that goes beyond awareness. One that equips Batswana youth with soft skills through community engagement: emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, active listening, and peer support. These must become everyday tools, not afterthoughts. I’m happy to say it’s in the pipeline - soon we’ll be moving around communities to empower young people.

Let’s build a future where every young person, especially our young men, has the skills to navigate pressure, support others, and thrive.

🇧🇼 The time to act is now. Let’s train, engage, and heal together.

I was honored to join the "Bridging the Gap" roundtable discussion, where young people and service providers sat together to talk about mental health services in Botswana. It was a powerful space for honest conversation—acknowledging the barriers that youth face, and listening to providers recognize the gaps they’re working to close as well.

My main message was simple: stop waiting for someone else to fix it. It's time for us to move from being victims of the situation to taking action. If you see a problem, step up. If safe spaces don’t exist, create them. Youth don’t have to be passive recipients—we can and we will take charge of our own mental well-being and advocate for the change we need.

Huge thanks to Mebala Youth Studios for bringing us together, and to everyone who showed up with openness and courage. This is just the beginning.

🎙️ On Saturday I had a thought-provoking discussion on Gabz FM on culture, identity, and development.

We covered a lot — from how colonization disrupted African languages, to whether tradition can coexist with globalization.

My take: our languages weren’t just influenced. They were systematically destroyed. And that loss cuts deep.

But here’s what I want every young person and leader to hear:

We need to modernize, not westernize.

There’s a difference.
Modernization is embracing innovation, technology, and progress on our own terms.
Westernization is abandoning who we are to fit someone else’s mold.

Families, parenting, music, fashion, and tourism — all of these can preserve and even grow our cultural identity. But only if we stop treating tradition as static, and start seeing it as a living, evolving foundation.

So yes, let our kids go on social media. But let them also know their mother tongue. Let them wear global fashion, rooted in local pride.

Takeaway:
Culture isn’t a museum piece. It’s a tool for economic and social development — if we don’t lose the plot.

On March 28th, JCI Gaborone kicked off its first major event of the year: Fit City: Mental Health and as Vice President Internal, I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved together.

We were honored to welcome the Deputy Mayor for G West, whose presence underscored the importance of addressing mental health at both community and policy levels. During the event, I had the opportunity to share key insights on the mental health challenges facing young people today, from social pressures to access to care with the goal of not only raising awareness but sparking real, open conversations.

Moments like these remind me why mental health advocacy matters. It’s not just about speaking, it’s about listening, normalizing the conversation, and breaking down the stigma that still surrounds mental well-being.

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering commitment and support of the JCI Gaborone Board members. Your dedication behind the scenes turned vision into action, and this event’s success is a direct reflection of our team’s hard work.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to see how we continue building a healthier, more resilient community – one conversation at a time.

I'm thrilled to share that I secured a volunteer placement at the University of Botswana's Careers and Counselling Centre! I'll be working with the centre to enhance graduate employability skills through employment counseling, CV writing, and helping students find attachments.

My responsibilities will include profiling, personal counseling, and addressing mental health issues, among other career-related concerns. I'm eager to collaborate with students, staff, and the community to promote inclusive solutions that support student success.

As a student myself, I'm excited to apply my research skills, particularly in mental health and climate change, and contribute to the university's initiatives. I'm looking forward to learning and growing in this role.

Today, I visited ST Joseph's College in Gaborone, Botswana, where I met with the Head of Guidance and Counseling and Father Tshiamo. We discussed the nature of mental health and drug and substance use issues among students, including the systems in place, their accessibility, and their effectiveness. I was impressed to learn that the school is already taking proactive steps to address these challenges. We agreed to collaborate in the coming weeks to implement strategies to tackle mental health and drug and substance use issues. Our first step will be to conduct an assessment using questionnaires to identify the specific challenges students are facing. Additionally, I offered to provide training for the guidance and counseling teachers on how to effectively address mental health issues with students. The engagement was enlightening, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow from this experience.

Today, I celebrate my birthday as a significant milestone, reflecting on the journey that has brought me here. Born with determination, I believed in the face of adversity and persevered through numerous obstacles. These challenges tested my resolve but ultimately forged me into a stronger, more resilient person committed to making a difference.

Upon reflection, I am struck by my own growth, dedication, and positive impact I have made. I am proud of the person I have become through hard work and sacrifice, and I am humbled by the difference my presence has made in the lives of individuals around the world.

I express my deepest gratitude to God for the gift of life and the opportunity to make a difference. I was born with little but determination, yet through faith and perseverance, I have achieved much. This birthday is not just a marker of time, but a celebration of a new era—the promise of a brighter future and the realization of my dreams.

Looking forward, I am filled with hope and anticipation, believing the best is yet to come. I am excited for future opportunities, challenges, and triumphs. Finally, I thank everyone who has impacted my life—family, mentors, friends, and those I've worked with. Your support has been invaluable, and I am grateful for each of you.
