👶🏽 Talking Breastfeeding with a Lactation Specialist Katinka Breastfeeding & Baby Massage – Part 2: Overcoming Early Breastfeeding Challenges

today we're focusing on one of the most important topics—early breastfeeding challenges.

Many new mothers ask themselves:
"Is the problem me?"
"Is it my baby?"
"Is my baby getting enough milk?"
"Could my baby be sick?"

If you've ever had these thoughts, please know that you're not alone. Breastfeeding is a skill that both mother and baby learn together, and it's perfectly normal to need support in those early days.

In this episode, I'm once again joined by lactation specialist Katinka Musavaya as we discuss what mothers can do when breastfeeding isn't going as expected, where to seek help, and why asking for support early can make all the difference.

👶🏽 Talking Breastfeeding with a Lactation Specialist Katinka Breastfeeding & Baby Massage – Part 1

Did you know that in Zimbabwe, only four out of every ten babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life?

In today's discussion, we're exploring why these numbers remain low and what can be done to better support mothers on their breastfeeding journey.

I'm delighted to be joined by Katinka Musavaya , a local lactation consultant with extensive experience supporting mothers and babies. Together, we'll discuss some of the common barriers to successful breastfeeding and share practical advice that can help mothers breastfeed with greater confidence.

📊 Around 35% of pregnancies in Zimbabwe are unintended.

That means there's a good chance that you, yes YOU , we're unintended 🤣.

One of the questions I hear almost on a daily is,
"What's the best contraception?"
Today I answer it before google does. 😁

In 2021, my husband and I got married and began trying for a family.

In 2022, we faced two early miscarriages — heartbreaking, and with no clear answers.

In January 2023, we fell pregnant again. At 20 weeks, we learned we were having a little boy. The very next day, I was diagnosed with placenta previa. I went into labour at 29 weeks. Our son spent 6 days in NICU, fighting so hard — but his little body couldn't endure it.

There are no words for that kind of loss. For a long time, we didn't know if we would ever become parents.

In August 2025, we found out we were expecting again — cautiously hopeful, but carrying so much fear. That's when we found Dr Chiwanga and her team. From the very beginning, they showed us patience, kindness, and compassion. They answered every question, supported every anxious moment, and helped us find hope again when we needed it most.

At 20 weeks, we found out we were having a little girl. This pregnancy was different — in all the best ways. Healthy, strong, no complications.

On the 13th of April 2026, we welcomed our beautiful baby girl into the world. 🤍

We will always carry our little boy in our hearts. His life, though short, will always be part of our story.

But here's what we've learned — hope can exist alongside grief. After loss, it's hard to trust your body, or let yourself imagine a happy ending. But sometimes, slowly and quietly, things do change.

If you're waiting, hurting, or wondering "will it ever be our turn?" — you're not alone. Be gentle with yourself, and hold onto whatever hope you can.

There is hope after loss. And sometimes, that hope grows into something beautiful.

Don't give up. 🤍.
