Race Against Time: Chinese Doctors Save Critically Ill Multi-Organ Failure Patient in Zimbabwe

Harare — In a high-stakes rescue mission, the 23rd Chinese Medical Team to Zimbabwe successfully saved a critically ill patient living with HIV who suffered from fatal multi-organ failure at Parirenyatwa Hospital, thanks to outstanding interdisciplinary teamwork.

The elderly patient was admitted with acute severe heart failure and cardiogenic shock. The complex condition was further complicated by lethal arrhythmia, respiratory failure, acute hepatorenal injury, severe sepsis and severe electrolyte disturbance, placing the patient at imminent risk of death. Local medical staff failed repeatedly to secure venous access due to massive systemic edema and collapsed peripheral vessels, leaving the urgent rescue stalled.

At the critical moment, Dr. Liao Shiyu bravely performed a high-risk, ultrasound-guided internal jugular central venous catheterization at the bedside. Establishing the only reliable venous access opened a vital treatment window, while onsite technical guidance was delivered to local colleagues simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Dr. Hou Can accurately assessed the life-threatening systemic disorder. With precise judgment of clinical indications, he performed synchronized cardioversion and successfully terminated the malignant arrhythmia in a single attempt. The patient’s vital signs stabilized rapidly, and circulatory failure was significantly reversed, achieving a complete turnaround of the critical condition.

The two Chinese specialists delivered perfectly coordinated treatment to overcome the two core fatal challenges of this severe case. Their exceptional critical care capability and sincere commitment to local capacity building earned high praise from Zimbabwe’s medical team.

This extraordinary rescue marks another remarkable achievement of China-Zimbabwe health cooperation. Moving forward, the Chinese medical team will continue to serve local communities with professional expertise, strengthen Zimbabwe’s critical care capacity, and further deepen the long-standing friendship between China and Zimbabwe.
