Amputation

In relation to a prosthesis, is a surgical procedure of removing the whole or a segment of the upper or lower limb which is no longer functional or relevant to the function for which it was designed to perform, thus allowing for a rehabilitation process of an individual to perform as close a function as was originally performed by the upper or lower limb concerned. There are levels of amputations which are a common feature for both lower or upper limbs. Below are some of the examples.

Lower Limb Amputations:

Hip Disarticulation ( Through Hip )
Transfemoral Amputation ( Above Knee )
Through Knee ( TK )
Transtibial ( Below Knee )
Symes
Chopart

Upper Limb Amputations:

Shoulder Disarticulation
Transhumeral ( Above Elbow )
Through Elbow
Below Elbow ( Transradial )
Through Wrist

The greater challenge though lies with the lower limb amputee, because it takes away the mobility aspect of the human being which is critical for basic and or normal function related to ability to work in an upright posture, requiring stabilization of the centre of gravity of the human body on two legs while utilising the hands for other duties. After the loss of unilateral or bilateral lower limbs, the majority of amputees find it extremely difficult to revert back to their original working stations since they may have been the labour force rather than office workers in an organisation.
