Resistance! That invisible force that often appears the moment we begin moving toward something different.
I know this experience well. I reckon you know it too!
You finally take the next step toward the life you’ve been imagining, and almost immediately a part of you begins presenting reasons to wait or even turn back.
Suddenly you feel uncertain, not good enough, underprepared, or convinced that you need more info or qualifications or experience before you can begin something new.
Resistance rarely announces itself as fear. Instead, it disguises itself as procrastination, self-doubt, distraction, perfectionism or the belief that now isn’t the right time. It creates a tension and an uncomfortable feeling that comes with stepping beyond what’s familiar and into something new.
It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you, it means you’re growing and are standing at the edge of a life you’ve never lived before.
One part of you can see incredible possibilities. It feels deeply drawn toward them and whispers “this is exactly what I want”.
Another part of you is simply trying to protect you. Your nervous system is wired to keep you safe and often interprets uncertainty as danger, even when that uncertainty is healthy, meaningful and aligned with who you’re becoming. That protective part quietly says “I’m not sure I want to become the person I’ll need to be in order to create this”.
And that’s where many of us stop. I know I have in the past!
We mistake discomfort for a sign that we should quit. We mistake doubt for evidence that our vision isn’t right. And we allow temporary emotions to overturn decisions that were made from a place of clarity, courage and deep knowing.
Resistance will almost always invite us to stay where we are because the familiar feels safer than the unknown. Even when the unknown is calling us towards a better life.
These days I’m learning to meet resistance with compassion rather than feeling shame. I’m becoming curious about the frightened parts of myself and what they’re trying to protect.
For so many years I gave fear the authority to make the decisions and determine the direction of my life. Now, I’m learning something different! I’m learning that I don’t have to be governed by every temporary emotion or sensation that passes through my body.
I don’t pretend the fear isn’t there, rather I hold it with tenderness while continuing to move toward the life I know is mine to create.
