Understanding Stringhalt 🌱🌼🐴
Stringhalt is a condition that affects the nervous system and movement patterns of the horse, causing an exaggerated lifting of one or both hind legs. It is commonly associated with grazing certain weeds such as Flatweed (Catsear), it can lead to secondary muscle tension, stiffness, and compensation throughout the body as the horse adapts to moving differently.
While bodywork does not cure Stringhalt, it can be an important part of a horse’s support and management plan. Horses with Stringhalt often place increased strain on surrounding muscles and soft tissues, which can result in discomfort, restricted movement, and reduced performance.
✨ Benefits of bodywork for horses with Stringhalt:
🌱Helps reduce muscle tension and compensatory tightness
🌱Supports mobility and range of motion
🌱Encourages better movement patterns where possible
🌱Improves circulation and tissue health
🌱Assists with comfort and overall wellbeing
🌱Supports the horse alongside veterinary care and management strategies
Every horse is different, which is why a tailored approach is so important. Early recognition, veterinary assessment, and ongoing support can make a significant difference to a horse’s comfort and quality of life.
