Understanding Stringhalt 🌱🌼🐴

Stringhalt is a condition that affects the nervous system and movement patterns of the horse, causing an exaggerated lifting of one or both hind legs. It is commonly associated with grazing certain weeds such as Flatweed (Catsear), it can lead to secondary muscle tension, stiffness, and compensation throughout the body as the horse adapts to moving differently.

While bodywork does not cure Stringhalt, it can be an important part of a horse’s support and management plan. Horses with Stringhalt often place increased strain on surrounding muscles and soft tissues, which can result in discomfort, restricted movement, and reduced performance.

✨ Benefits of bodywork for horses with Stringhalt:
🌱Helps reduce muscle tension and compensatory tightness
🌱Supports mobility and range of motion
🌱Encourages better movement patterns where possible
🌱Improves circulation and tissue health
🌱Assists with comfort and overall wellbeing
🌱Supports the horse alongside veterinary care and management strategies

Every horse is different, which is why a tailored approach is so important. Early recognition, veterinary assessment, and ongoing support can make a significant difference to a horse’s comfort and quality of life.

We genuinely cannot stop smiling reading this one!🥹

Since completing her Certificate in Equine Sport Therapy with Equestricare in 2024, Charlotte launched Clydes Equine Bodywork and what she has achieved since then is nothing short of remarkable.

In just over a year Charlotte has;
🏆 Received the Outstanding New Business Award 2025 at the ESC Business Awards
🏆 Received the Outstanding Young Business Leader Award 2025 at the ESC Business Awards
🏆 Gone on to become a finalist in both categories at the NSW Business Awards
📰 Been recognised on the Australian Performance Horse Magazine 30 Under 30 list in 2026

And she's doing all of this while travelling across the Far South Coast, Sydney, Wagga Wagga, the ACT, and down to the Victorian border!

Charlotte is living proof that when you find work you truly love, there are absolutely no limits to how far it can take you. 🐴

Here's what she had to say:

"I have never viewed this industry as "just a job." It is something I truly love, and I live by the saying, "Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Working hands-on with these incredible animals every day has only strengthened my passion and inspired me to continue expanding my knowledge and skills within the equine industry."

This is everything we work toward at Equestricare. Congratulations Charlotte, we are so proud of you!!

If this is the kind of career you dream of, we'd love to help you get there too.

The connection between hoof balance and bodywork is stronger than most people realise. 👣✨

When the hoof is unbalanced, the entire body has to compensate. This can lead to muscle tension, soreness, shortened stride, uneven movement and added strain through the joints and soft tissue.

Bodywork can help relieve the tension created by imbalance, but if the feet aren’t functioning correctly, the body will continue to work against itself. A balanced hoof helps support better movement, comfort, posture and overall performance.

Healthy movement starts from the ground up. 🐴

One of the most overlooked parts of post-treatment care -💧 Water.

During and after a bodywork session, your horse’s body is processing a lot more than most people realise.

Bodywork increases circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system, encourages muscle and fascial release, and supports nervous system regulation. All of these systems rely heavily on proper hydration to function effectively.

When horses have access to fresh water after treatment, it can help:
💧Support muscle recovery
💧Maintain healthy fascia and tissue elasticity 💧Reduce post-treatment tightness or soreness 💧Support joint and digestive function
💧Help the body adapt to changes in movement and posture

Some horses will drink during a session, others immediately after — and often, that’s the body asking for exactly what it needs.

If your horse is getting fidgety and not concentrating, I will ask you to take it for a short walk and offer it some water (sometimes they need to pee🫣)

Hydration isn’t just important after hard work or hot days. It’s an important part of recovery, regulation and getting the most out of your horse’s treatment.

Sometimes the smallest management details make the biggest difference in how a horse feels and performs.✨

Strong joints = a horse that moves, performs, and feels better 🐎✨

Joint health isn’t just about managing issues when they appear — it’s about supporting the body before things go wrong. Every stride, turn, and transition places stress on the joints, and without the right care, that wear and tear adds up over time.

Things that make a real difference:
• Consistent, correct movement
• Balanced nutrition to support cartilage + inflammation
• Regular bodywork to reduce compensations and strain
• Listening to the subtle signs before they become big problems

Stiffness, resistance, uneven movement, or changes in attitude under saddle can all be early indicators that something isn’t quite right.

When the body moves well, the joints are supported. And when the joints are supported, your horse can perform at their best comfortably and confidently.

If your horse isn’t feeling quite right, or you want to stay ahead of potential issues, reach out to chat or book a session🩵
