Teaching writing is an artform and an area I continue to stretch in order to meet the nuanced needs of my students. Two Perth specialist tutors have created a sentence teaching approach that integrates visual scaffolds with careful questioning so that students can better comprehend what they read, and better write what they wish to say. Congruent with evidence on how to incrementally scaffold learning, sentence elements are introduced one at a time, and repeatedly worked with using the 'I Do, We Do, You Do' approach before independent writing. It also extends into writing summary sentences and paragraph writing.
I will be introducing the approach to my literacy intervention students over the coming weeks - and look forward to observing how they respond.
