SurgicalPerformance is a secure web-based platform built for surgeons by surgeons to collect insights about their surgical procedures, their outcomes and any confounders. It was founded in 2009 by surgeons to support clinicians in their endeavours to improve patient outcomes. SurgicalPerformance is a simple, accurate and confidential tool that allows individual surgeons to record their surgical performance. The data collected is essential to providing bench-marked feedback in order to self-assess and improve. The data will also stand up to the highest levels of scrutiny should your practice come under question. Its main task is to support doctors by providing them with information on their treatment outcomes. Doctors then can take corrective action if they deem it necessary. Only registered medical practitioners can use the software. Access is secured by the use of a username and password. All data transfer is encrypted, safe from interference and stored securely.

New research co-authored by our founder Professor Andreas Obermair looks at something surgical teams rarely have structured data on: how patients are actually doing years after non-surgical endometrial cancer management.

The feMMe trial followed patients with early-stage endometrial cancer or endometrial hyperplasia with atypia who were managed conservatively with a levonorgestrel IUD, avoiding surgery and preserving fertility. The oncologic outcomes were already established. This long-term follow-up examined quality of life, self-efficacy, and patient-reported experience at a median of 63 months after trial entry.

The findings are broadly reassuring. Overall quality of life was favourable and comparable across treatment strategies. 74.4% of participants reported a positive treatment experience and 85.4% would recommend conservative management to others.

One finding stands out: patients who achieved pathological complete response reported significantly better physical activity self-efficacy. A marker worth paying attention to in survivorship care.

The research also points to a consistent gap: perceived social support for health behaviours was limited across the cohort. A signal that structured survivorship support has a role to play alongside oncologic follow-up.

Intraoperative adverse events in gynaecological surgery are more common than reported. Not because surgeons are hiding them, but because until recently there was no standardised way to classify them.
CiASE, the Classification of Intraoperative Adverse Surgical Events, changes that. Developed by colleagues at the Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer Research, CiASE provides a validated grading system from Grade 0 (no adverse event) through to Grade 4 (intraoperative or perioperative death), with 95.2% accuracy and near-perfect inter-rater reliability across 25 surgeons.

It distinguishes between adverse events that have minimal impact on recovery and those that require readmission, reoperation, or result in ongoing disability. It gives surgeons a shared, precise language for what happens in the operating room.
