Blossom of the week, my beautiful sweet peas. With the most delightful smell, these are certainly a favourite in my garden, at this time of the year 💗

Do you have a child starting school next year or learning their sounds?

Turn “I spy” into a literacy game! 👀

🚶‍♀️ On your next walk, try: “I spy something starting with sss… sun!” ☀️

Say the sound sss, rather than the letter name “ess”. Take turns finding things, and model different things if your child needs help.

Noticing the sounds in spoken words is part of a skill called phonological awareness. This supports the skills of learning to read and spell. ✍🏼📖

Whilst playing, you could also give clues and chat about where things are.

This is “under” the table or this is “small”.

You are then working on phonological awareness skills and building your child’s language and understanding of concepts.

It’s OT week!! So check out the slides, for some of the goals our OT’s could support your child / family with 🌼

Some of these goals could be targeted through a parent coaching approach or in 1:1 therapy with your child.

With parent coaching, you and your OT will chat about & work together on everyday goals, like getting dressed, managing the morning routine or toileting 👕🚽🪥

You bring your knowledge of your child, and your OT helps you explore strategies, try them out and work out what fits your family 🙌🏼

Some families benefit from a mix of both. It comes back to your child’s goals and the support that works for you.

A simple yet stunning paper daisy - our Blossom of the Week 🌼

Now for our tip for the week for parents/govies/teachers of school-aged kids! 📚

💡Explain new words as they come up or grab out a dictionary 🙌🏼

Everyday conversations might bring new words that your child doesn’t understand the meaning to.

If they ask “what does that mean?” or “what’s XYZ?” … explain the word and then have them look up the word in a dictionary (or google).

There are wonderful junior/children’s dictionary’s available or look on Britannica Kids Dictionary online.

Then try and use the word later in the week when an opportunity arises. Small chats can help kids understand and use a wider range of words!

This helps with their conversational and written language skills 🙌🏼

If it would be handy & depending on their age - grab a notebook and have them write these words in there. They could even put the word in a sentence & draw a picture to go with the sentence.

Blossom of the week - GAMES edition 🌻🐝

With school holidays here, why not pull out some board or card games to try, for inside play 🎲

For younger kids:
💛 Snap
💛 Matching Pairs

Try modelling lots of language like “your turn”, “my turn”, “snap”, “same or different”. This is creating opportunities for connection, turn taking & following simple instructions.

For older school-aged kiddos… some of my clients faves at the moment are:
🌻 Memory (with LOTS of cards)
🌻 UNO or UNO Flip
🌻 Connect 4
🌻 Guess Who
🌻 Charades

These are wonderful for working on problem solving skills, winning vs losing, working memory and explaining ideas.

So why not pull out some card or board games for inside play time, during these school holidays!

My ranunculus from the garden, for our Blossom of the Week 💗

So many pretty flowers in the garden at the moment and I am loving it. From the blossoms on the peach tree to mulberries, I love this time of the year!! 🍓

We have some states with school holidays and some in the last week of Term 3 🤯 How!?!?

This week’s little reminder, especially if you’re heading into school holidays… leave a bit of breathing room & take the pressure off 🥰

After school, that might mean a snack and a bit of play before asking about your child’s day 🍎

If you’re on school holidays, leave some space between the outings and activities too 🛝 Allow for outside time & time with nothing planned. You might hear “I’m boreeeeeed”, BUT I think this can be where the magic starts and imaginations flourish 🙌🏼

Unwinding looks different for every child. Some want quiet, others want to move 🕺🏽

RRED day is all about building awareness for kids accessing their education through distance education 🫶🏼

We are so fortunate to work alongside so many beautiful families that access their education through distance education.

Our team see first-hand the dedication and care it takes to keep kids learning and thriving, no matter their location 🫶🏼
