Building Blocks Therapy is a private Occupational Therapy practice that aims to empower kids to reach their full potential. Our purpose is to help kids overcome life’s obstacles and challenges by facilitating a fun and safe environment where kids are fully engaged in the positive activities chosen to create a “just right challenge’, that enables them to develop the skill and confidence they need to successfully participate in everyday activities. We are passionate about working collaboratively with families and/or other significant people/health care professionals involved with the child to ensure that the family can function optimally and overcome life’s challenges and the child has every opportunity possible to achieve their goals and dreams.

✨ TIP TUESDAY | PRETEND PLAY

Pretend play is more than just fun — it helps little minds build **language, social skills, problem solving and emotional understanding** through PLAY. 🧠💛

Let them lead. Step into their world. Watch the learning happen. 🌱

✨ TIP TUESDAY | PRETEND PLAY✨

That cardboard box isn’t just a box… it’s a rocket ship, a café, a castle or maybe even a vet clinic! 🚀🏰🐶

Pretend play is an important part of childhood development. When children use their imagination, they’re also building skills in:

🧠 Problem solving & flexible thinking
💬 Language & communication
🤝 Social skills & turn-taking
❤️ Understanding emotions & different perspectives
🌱 Confidence & independence

This week’s tip:You don’t need fancy toys! Give your child everyday items like boxes, containers, dress-ups, dolls or kitchen utensils and let them lead the story.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is step into their imaginary world and play along. 💛

Boys are made to MOVE! 🏃‍♂️💙

Movement isn’t just about burning energy — it plays an important role in how boys learn, regulate and connect.

Climbing, running, jumping, pushing, pulling and rough-and-tumble play can support:
✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Focus and attention
✨ Body awareness and coordination
✨ Confidence and independence
✨ Sensory processing
✨ Learning and development

Sometimes, before we ask a child to **sit still and focus**, their body needs the opportunity to **move first**.

Movement isn’t always a distraction from learning — sometimes, it’s exactly what helps make learning possible. 💙

🌿 TIP TUESDAY: Co-Regulation — What Does It Actually Look Like?

Last week we talked about co-regulation — but knowing what it is and knowing what to do in the moment are two very different things.

When your child is overwhelmed, angry, anxious or melting down, their nervous system is telling you: “I can’t regulate this on my own right now.”
That’s where you come in. 💛

So, what does co-regulation look like in practice?

When emotions are BIG:

👉 Regulate yourself first. Slow your breathing, soften your voice and lower your body to their level.
👉Use fewer words. This isn’t the time for explanations, lectures or lots of questions. Try: “I’m here.” “You’re safe.” “We’ll work it out together.”
👉Stay close without forcing connection. Some children want a cuddle; others need space. You can be present without demanding interaction.
👉Name what you notice. “That was really frustrating.” “Your body looks like it needs a break.”
👉Help their body regulate. Depending on your child, this might look like slow breathing together, firm hugs (if welcomed), rocking, movement, a quiet space, a drink of water or simply sitting beside them.
👉Save the teaching for later. Regulation comes before reasoning. Once their body is calm and connected again, then you can talk about what happened.

💡 Try this: Instead of asking, “Why are you behaving like this?” try asking yourself, “What does my child need from me right now to feel safe and supported?”

Co-regulation isn't about stopping every meltdown or giving in to behaviour. It's about lending your child your calm while they develop the skills to find their own.
Your calm becomes their anchor. Over time, your co-regulation helps build their self-regulation. 🌱

💛 TIP TUESDAY: CO-REGULATION

Before children can learn to regulate their emotions on their own, they often need to experience regulation with a safe, calm adult.

This is called co-regulation.

Co-regulation is when an adult uses their calm presence, connection and support to help a child move through big emotions, stress or overwhelm.

It might look like:

✨ Staying calm when your child is struggling
✨ Getting down to their level
✨ Naming and validating their feelings
✨ Offering reassurance and connection
✨ Using a gentle voice and simple language
✨ Breathing, moving or calming together

Why is it so important?

Children aren't born knowing how to manage big emotions. Through repeated experiences of being supported by a regulated adult, they gradually build the skills to recognise their feelings, feel safe in their bodies and eventually regulate more independently.

💛 Connection comes before correction. Sometimes a child doesn't need us to stop the feeling — they need us to help them feel safe enough to move through it.
