Fear is the greatest deterrent preventing First Aiders from offering a hand to a hurt person. Sometimes we place the fear into our own heads with thoughts such as "I'll get into trouble if I do this badly."
It's impossible for a First Aider to get into trouble, even if you accidentally hurt the person, when you were trying to help them UNLESS you treat the casualty with reckless disregard such as cutting off bits and pieces, something we aren't supposed to do. But you're not going to do that, are you :)

Most people don't really want to attend a course on a Saturday but sometimes shifts determine that it must be a Saturday. In spite of that, this group on Saturday the 8th of August were cheery and happy to learn skills that could save a loved-ones life. So many, many thanks to all of you including Aaron ... my crash-test dummy :), Deszrie; Ricci; Karen; Adrian; Almira; Aya; Catherine; Jane; Jason; Kevin; Kylie (remember Kylie :); Lisa; Lyle; Scott; Sean and Audrey. Well done to everyone who attended training on the 31st of July. I trust you are all ready now to help those who need your help. And remember ... trust your gut instincts. Call 000 if your guts are telling you the person needs hospital, and don't let them talk you out of making the call.

November came and is about to go and before you know it, Christmas is upon us and being celebrated. Sometimes a little too much celebrating is had. The best First Aid is never having to do First Aid but, for all our best intentions, accidents happen and sometimes we let our guard down. You don't want to end up in the emergency department and a surgeon, holden a scalpel, is rushing towards you. So be mindful of your safety, don't do anything stupid and don't let your friends do the same. Look out for each other.

Do you trust your gut instincts? I hope you do. More-so, I hope you act on your gut instincts. I hear so many stories of 'soon to be' casualties convincing their partners that there's no need to call 000 as the pain is just indigestion and bingo, it ends up being a heart attack. I was recently told of a lady who had a terrible pain in her left shoulder and upper arm. For three weeks her workmates told her to go to the hospital but she brushed their warnings aside. She finally caved in but made it no further than triage. She died in the Cairns Base emergency department. There was nothing the doctors could do to save her because she left it too late. Her workmates should have trusted their gut instincts and insisted she go to hospital and should have called the ambulance themselves. But they didn't and she died. Listen to your gut instincts and never let a person talk you out of calling 000 if your gut instincts tell you you should.

We're at it again and once more the wonderful First Aiders march out of the Cairns RSL looking for a life to save.
