One thing many people do not know about anxiety is this:
Avoiding something can make the anxiety stronger next time.
For example, you feel anxious before an appointment. You cancel it. The anxiety drops straight away.
Your brain may then learn:
“I felt better because I cancelled.”
The next appointment can feel even harder.
When the situation is safe, try waiting a few minutes before cancelling. Sit somewhere quiet. Slow your breathing. Let the anxiety rise and fall before you decide.
This may save you from cancelling, rebooking, and worrying about it again later.
I work with people aged 14 and over who feel anxious, stressed, or stuck in avoidance.
In counselling, I explain things in simple terms. We look at what is happening and find a step that feels realistic.
I will always be clear about what I can provide, what it costs, and whether I am the right counsellor for you.
I provide counselling in Cairns and online across Australia.
