Ok I have to share this because I’m still a little starstruck. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Maggie Beer this week to listen to her talk about something we’re both deeply passionate about: How food and nutrition shape the way we age.
Maggie’s work in aged care nutrition has been a game-changer for the industry, and hearing her speak about the connection between good food, dignity, social interaction and wellbeing in later life was so inspiring. It reaffirmed so much of what I see every day in my own practice here at Hive Nutrition.
Here’s what stuck with me most:
Food is more than fuel especially as we age, meals are about pleasure, connection and quality of life.
Protein matters more than we think, maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important for strength, independence and recovery as we get older.
Small simple changes to nutrition habits can make a real difference to energy, cognition and overall vitality in midlife and beyond.
The Maggie Beer Foundation, which she founded in 2014 was designed to transform the way food is prepared, served and enjoyed in aged care settings across the country. It’s built on the belief that everyone deserves access to nutritious, delicious and enjoyable meals regardless of age. Exactly the kind of advocacy our aged care sector needs more of.
Healthy aging starts now — the habits we build in our 40s and 50s lay the groundwork for how we feel in our 60s, 70s and beyond. If you want to feel your best as you age, know that nutrition really is one of the most powerful tools we have and I’d love to help you make the most of it.
