What Do Developmental Educators Actually Do?

Developmental Educators work in partnership with people living with disability to co-design supports that build:

✔ Goals that are meaningful and achievable
✔ Skills for everyday life
✔ Capacity for independence and decision-making
✔ Social connections and community belonging
✔ Opportunities for growth and participation
✔ Inclusion across all environments
✔ Understanding of self and others
✔ Confidence to navigate life
✔ Independence in ways that matter to the individual

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all model — it’s collaborative, individualised, and grounded in respect.

At its core, Developmental Education is about empowering people to live the life they choose.

Recently I was on the hunt for a new rug "aka jacket or PJ's" for my horses. Doc in particular has been really suffering from being itchy, rubbing his mane, tail, belly, neck... During my research I stumbled onto a rug that had a repellent within it and even better there was a competition to win one of these rugs. Well, I was the lucky winner of this rug and won the fly repellent mesh rug. So excited 😊 Thank you Kerry Gibson from 'Love My Horse'

Check them out... lots to choose from! Again from the bottom of my heart, thank you Kerry, Doc is itching less and less these days.

Doc, Poppy and Stormy are all also washed every week with Quit Itch, wormed and follow a diet that is grain and soy free (CEN grainfree, and CEN Oil). Looking after my horses is so important as they support many of my clients in their equine therapy sessions.

🐎🐐🌿 A Day at Montrose Hills Therapy 🐎🐐🌿

The morning begins quietly on the Conway farm

The goats are already curious at the fence, the chickens are busy scratching through the garden beds, and the horses move slowly across the paddock as the day begins.

A participant arrives and pauses for a moment, taking in the scene and wondering what their session might bring today.

Will they...
- Help prepare a special treat for the horses?
- Collect eggs from the chickens?
- Prepare the evening meals for the animals?
- Or step inside the therapy space?

Some days the gates open and the goats wander over, eager to say hello to their human friends or explore the paddock together.

Other days the horses walk up to the gate first, quietly greeting the participants. Sometimes it feels like the beginning of a conversation, or an emotional exchange that doesn’t need words.

Along the way there are small but meaningful moments.

Noticing how a horse communicates through the movement of its ears and body.
Watching a chicken dust-bathe in the warm soil.

Standing quietly beside a horse, sharing a calm and peaceful moment.

These experiences are more than farm activities.

Through Developmental Education and animal-assisted therapy, these moments can support emotional regulation, confidence, communication, and connection.

Because sometimes the most powerful learning doesn’t happen in a therapy room.

Sometimes it happens out in nature, beside a paddock gate, surrounded by animals who simply invite us to slow down and be present. 🐎🐐🌿
