Thoracolumbar Spine: Segmentation, Mobility & Control

This Functional Range Conditioning class is centred on building strength, awareness, and usable motion through the thoracic and lumbar spine. We’ll explore spinal flexion and extension—the foundational movements that help us access and control the rest of the spine’s movement options, including rotation and lateral flexion.

Unlike many joints, the spine works as a connected system. Developing comfortable, controlled flexion and extension can support better movement quality, help us understand where we may be compensating, and create a stronger base for overall spinal health. Rather than simply chasing flexibility, FRC focuses on owning your range: improving joint-specific control, strength at end range, and confidence in movement.

We’ll begin with warm-ups and general spinal flexion and extension, before moving into progressive PAILs work. From there, we’ll explore lumbar and thoracic PAILs and RAILs to build active control and strength through both regions. We’ll finish with spinal segmentation work, bringing attention to how each part of the spine can contribute to smooth, intentional movement.

This class is for anyone wanting to move with more spinal awareness, build capacity through range, and create a more resilient foundation for everyday movement.

Are you struggling with a chronic soft-tissue injury that just doesn’t seem to heal?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers mechanical energy in the form of acoustic sound waves into an injured area. It does not use electricity or deliver an electric shock.

The mechanical stimulation produces a process known as mechanotransduction, where cells convert mechanical energy into biological signals. This may encourage local circulation, activate tissue-repair processes, support collagen production and remodelling, and help reduce pain sensitivity.

Shockwave therapy may be helpful for persistent tendon and soft-tissue conditions such as:

Shoulder Injury Rehab: Building the Foundation with CARs & Capsular CARs

If you are recovering from a shoulder injury, restoring healthy internal and external rotation is an important foundation for improving shoulder function.

In this Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) class, we focus on two key exercises demonstrated in the video:

Shoulder CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) help you actively move the shoulder through the range of motion you currently own and control. The goal is to maintain and improve joint mobility, stimulate the joint and surrounding tissues, improve active control, and gradually explore the edges of your available pain-free range.

Capsular CARs focus specifically on controlled internal and external rotation of the shoulder in different positions. The goal is to stimulate the joint capsule, improve rotational capacity, encourage movement and circulation around the joint, and begin restoring the rotational foundation needed for healthy shoulder mechanics.

Internal and external rotation are fundamental components of shoulder function. By gradually improving rotation, joint control, and movement capacity, we can build a stronger foundation for healing and progress toward more advanced shoulder mobility and strengthening exercises.

Work slowly, stay within an appropriate and pain-free range, and focus on controlled, intentional movement throughout each exercise.

Welcome to this Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) Hip Extension Class, where we’ll first explore several different hip extension base positions before progressing through a complete mobility session. Not every hip extension base works for every body, so we’ll cover multiple options to help you find the position that best creates a comfortable and effective line of tension through the front of the hip and joint capsule.

In this class you’ll learn:

Different hip extension base variations to suit your body
Hip Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs)
PAILs and RAILs contractions
End-range lift-offs
Capsular CARs
Breathing strategies to improve relaxation and reduce unnecessary muscle guarding

Why Functional Range Conditioning?

Functional Range Conditioning is far more than stretching. It is a scientifically informed system designed to improve usable mobility—the amount of movement that you can actively control.

Many people can passively move into a position, but lack the strength and neurological control to own that range. The nervous system often limits movement when it senses instability or weakness at the end of a joint’s available motion. FRC addresses this by combining prolonged stretching with high-intensity isometric contractions that teach your brain it is safe to access and control these positions.

Research in connective tissue physiology and motor learning suggests that prolonged loading can encourage gradual adaptation within muscles, fascia and connective tissues, while controlled end-range contractions improve neuromuscular coordination, strength and joint stability. Over time, this may help increase active range of motion, improve movement quality and reduce compensatory movement patterns.

Throughout this class we focus on:

• Improving active hip extension mobility

• Developing strength at end range

• Increasing motor control and proprioception (your body’s awareness of joint position)

• Stimulating the joint through controlled movement to support healthy joint function

Hip CARs and Capsular CARs also help maintain healthy joint motion by moving the joint through its available range under muscular control. This provides valuable sensory input to the nervous system while helping maintain healthy movement capacity.

Remember, mobility isn’t simply about becoming more flexible. True mobility is having strength, control and ownership throughout your available range of motion. That’s exactly what this class is designed to develop.

In this Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) hip flexion class, Dr. Luke guides you through a hip flexion base designed to improve joint mobility, increase active range of motion, and build strength at your end ranges.

This class incorporates PAILs (Progressive Angular Isometric Loading) and RAILs (Regressive Angular Isometric Loading) contractions, Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs), and Passive Range Holds to help improve the health and function of your hip joint.

PAILs and RAILs are used to teach the nervous system how to safely access and control greater ranges of motion while simultaneously strengthening the tissues that support the joint. This approach helps develop usable mobility rather than simply increasing flexibility.

In today’s Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) class, we focus on improving hip internal rotation through controlled mobility work, hip CARs, PAILs and RAILs contractions, lift-offs, and capsular rotations. This session is designed to help improve active control, joint health, mobility, and awareness through the hip joint while reducing compensation through the spine and surrounding structures.

Remember, mobility is built progressively over time. If you feel overly sore after the session, reduce the intensity of the stretch and contractions next time and work within a safe, pain-free range. If your body responds well and you recover comfortably, gradually increase the intensity of the stretch and your PAILs and RAILs contractions over time.

The goal with PAILs and RAILs is to create high-intensity but safe and pain-free contractions to improve strength and active control in your outer ranges. Consistency and progressive adaptation are key to building long-term mobility health.

All you’ll need is a chair and some yoga blocks or books to get started. Let’s improve hip function and ownership together. 💪
