Wellness Wednesday | Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Bowel cancer is one of Australia’s most common cancers, & early detection can make a serious difference.

Eligible Australians aged 45–74 can complete a free bowel screening test at home every 2 years. If a kit arrives in the mail, don’t leave it sitting in the cupboard, use it.

Please book with your GP if you notice:

• blood in your poo or on toilet paper
• ongoing changes in bowel habits
• unexplained abdominal pain, bloating or cramping
• unexplained weight loss or fatigue
• symptoms that don’t feel normal for you

If you have symptoms, concerns, or questions about bowel screening, book an appointment with your GP.

Why do we ask patients with cold, flu or COVID like symptoms to do a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) before coming into the clinic?

Because “just a cold” for one person can be much more serious for someone else.

Every day, we care for patients who may be elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised, undergoing treatment, living with chronic illness, or caring for vulnerable people at home. We also have staff & doctors who may have health risks themselves, or unwell family members they go home to.

If you have symptoms such as a cough, sore throat, runny nose, fever, chills, body aches or shortness of breath, please let our team know before entering the clinic.

We may ask you to:

• complete a Rapid Antigen Test
• wear a mask
• wait outside or in your car
• attend by telehealth if appropriate
• follow additional instructions from our administration or clinical team

These steps are not about making your appointment harder.

They are about keeping everyone safer.

Thank you for helping us protect our patients, staff & doctors.

Arexvy is a vaccine available for older adults that helps protect against serious RSV related illness.

The vaccine is free for adults aged 75+, & Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people aged 60+.

Some other adults aged 60–74 may be able to access it privately, please speak with your GP to see if it’s right for you.
