In this video, you’ll see one of our patients having an intravenous catheter placed, but there’s something important happening before we even begin.

Rather than rushing straight into the procedure, this patient has already received their pre-medication. Pre-medication helps reduce anxiety, provides pain relief where needed, and allows many patients to feel calm and relaxed before we place their catheter.

Once they’re comfortable, catheter placement becomes a much gentler experience. It reduces stress for the patient, allows our team to work safely and efficiently, and helps create a more positive association with future veterinary visits.
Every pet is different, and not every patient requires the same approach. We tailor our handling and sedation plans to the individual, always aiming to minimise fear, anxiety and stress wherever possible.

Fear-free medicine isn’t just about making procedures easier, it’s about improving your pet’s welfare and ensuring they feel as safe and comfortable as we can throughout their visit.

Bean recently presented to us after a linear foreign body, a length of cotton string, became wrapped around his tongue, travelled down his oesophagus and into his stomach.

Unlike many other foreign objects, string can act like a “cheese wire” through the intestines if pulled. As the intestines continue their normal movement, they can bunch up along the string, increasing the risk of serious injury or even intestinal perforation.

Because of this, never attempt to pull a string from your pet’s mouth, even if it looks like it could come out easily. Instead, keep your pet as calm as possible and seek veterinary attention immediately.

Bean required emergency surgery, known as an exploratory laparotomy, to safely remove the obstruction. Once the section of string causing the intestines to bunch was carefully identified and released, our surgical team was able to gently retrieve the remaining string back through Bean’s mouth without causing further damage.

Thankfully, Bean’s surgery went very well, and he’s now on the road to recovery.

A huge thank you to Bean’s family for acting quickly and trusting us with his care. Early intervention can make all the difference in cases like these.

A microchip is one of the simplest ways to help protect your feathered family member.

Unlike leg bands, a microchip provides permanent identification that can’t be lost or removed. If your bird ever escapes and is found, a registered microchip gives them the best chance of making it safely back home.

For patient comfort, we perform avian microchipping under a very short general anaesthetic using isoflurane. This means the procedure is quick, pain-free and low stress, taking less than two minutes from start to finish, with birds recovering rapidly afterwards.

Lucy and Kiera, two gorgeous Maltese girls, recently visited us for their Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Radiography (COHAR).
Dental disease is one of the most common conditions we see in our canine patients, and unfortunately it often progresses silently. By the time our pets show obvious signs, they may already be experiencing significant discomfort.

A COHAR allows us to thoroughly assess every tooth under general anaesthetic, perform full-mouth dental radiographs, scale and polish the teeth, and treat any diseased teeth where required. Many problems, particularly those below the gumline, can’t be seen during a routine awake examination.

Following their procedures, Lucy and Kiera recovered beautifully and are now heading home with healthier, more comfortable smiles.
A big thank you to their family for prioritising their dental health. Preventative dental care is one of the best ways to support your pet’s overall health and quality of life.

Atticus visited us for his kitten vaccination and pre-desexing health check, and he certainly made himself at home!

Wrapped up nice and warm in his little jacket, Atticus was happiest curled up with our nurse, Amelie. He even decided to lend a helping paw by supervising (and perhaps helping write!) his clinical notes.

We’re pleased to report that Atticus passed his health check with flying colours and is all set for his upcoming desexing procedure.

A very special visitor to Gawler Animal Hospital today.

This echidna was brought to us after being struck by a car. Our veterinary team carefully examined him before performing radiographs under a general anaesthetic to assess for any internal injuries or fractures.

Fortunately, the imaging showed no significant underlying injuries, and he appears to have escaped with only superficial facial wounds, which is a very lucky outcome.

After receiving pain relief and appropriate treatment, he was discharged into the care of our wonderful wildlife partners at Barossa Wildlife Rescue, where he will continue his recovery with ongoing monitoring, antibiotics, and supportive care before, hopefully, being released back into the wild.

A huge thank you to the kind member of the public who stopped to help, and to Barossa Wildlife Rescue for the incredible work they do caring for our native wildlife. We wish this little guy a smooth and speedy recovery.
