Book Review | Help Me Help My Teen by Maggie Dent
As both a paediatric Occupational Therapist and the mum of teenagers, I absolutely loved Help Me Help My Teen by Maggie Dent.
Parenting teenagers can be one of the most rewarding and challenging chapters of family life. This book is a gentle reminder that our relationship with our teens matters more than having all the right answers. Maggie encourages us to stay connected, remain curious and be a safe place for our young people to land, even during the messy moments.
Reading it through my OT lens, I particularly appreciated the focus on connection, emotional safety and understanding what sits beneath behaviour. As we know, behaviour is communication, and when we respond with curiosity and compassion instead of judgement, we create opportunities for trust and growth.
From a neuroaffirming perspective, many of Maggieโs messages resonated strongly with me. While every neurodivergent teenager has their own unique experiences and support needs, the themes of acceptance, belonging, co-regulation and leading with empathy are ones that every family can benefit from. Supporting teenagers starts with understanding themโnot trying to change who they are.
As a mum, this book also prompted plenty of reflection. It reminded me that sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply keep showing up, listening without trying to fix everything, and letting our teenagers know theyโre loved exactly as they are.
I highly recommend this book to parents, carers and professionals working with adolescents.
Iโm also really looking forward to Maggie Dentโs upcoming book, Digital Freedom. In a world where technology is woven into almost every part of our teenagersโ lives, I think this will be an incredibly valuable resource and a perfect companion to Help Me Help My Teen.
Have you read it? Iโd love to hear your thoughtsโor let me know if Digital Freedom is already on your reading list too!
