Why 3D mammography?

Clinically proven to improve breast cancer detection, particularly in women with dense breasts.

Unlike conventional 2D mammography, which captures images from two directions, 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes multiple images from different angles to create a detailed 3D view of the breast.

This helps reduce the effect of overlapping breast tissue and can make small or subtle abnormalities easier to see.

The result? A more detailed view of the breast and improved cancer detection — particularly important for women with dense breast tissue.

At our Gympie & Noosa clinics, advanced 3D mammography is part of our comprehensive breast imaging service.

Density matters because:

1. High breast density is associated with increased risk of breast cancer

2. High breast density limits the sensitivity of breast cancer detection

3. Vascular-based imaging (MRI or contrast-enhanced mammography) should be considered in women with high breast density

Breastscreen Australia recommends all women be informed of their breast density. We quantitatively measure volumetric breast density for all women undergoing mammography in our breast imaging departments in Noosa Radiology & Gympie Radiology.

Most women don’t know their breast cancer risk category, or their breast density — and both change what screening you actually need.

Know your risk: normal / moderate / high — high risk can mean 20% lifetime risk + MRI eligibility

Know your age: 40 for normal/moderate risk, 30 for high risk

Know your density: dense breasts need MRI or contrast-enhanced mammography, not just mammography
