🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

With the sad news of his passing last month, we would like to highlight a truly inspiring human being, Neale Daniher.

After a very successful 35 year career playing and coaching AFL football, Neale was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2013. MND is a degenerative condition of the nervous system with no current cure, with an average survival time of 2-4 years after diagnosis.

Since his diagnosis Neale has worked tirelessly to highlight the challenges for people living with MND, and through his charity work (Fight MND, the Big Freeze) has raised millions of dollars in funding for research into a cure. He was named 2025 Australian of the year for these efforts.

Despite the challenges of physical and cognitive decline, Neale was determined to stay active and to demonstrate to others that it is possible to keep fighting, even with a terminal illness.

Vale Neale Daniher (1961 – 2026)

🧪🎓✏️Our May Science Snapshot:

Do we need to “Activate The Core” during exercise?

Have you ever been told to make sure you ‘activate your core’ during exercise?
The traditional idea that we need to intentionally brace the trunk to stabilise the spine has recently been challenged.

A Brazilian study published just last month, investigated the impact of specific core activation vs. deliberate relaxation on back pain intensity during exercise, in a group of 152 participants with low back pain.

The results found that education to activate the abdominal muscles during exercise had no benefit on pain or perceived function, and advice to relax during exercise actually had a beneficial effect (albeit small) on level of disability due to pain.

The take home message: consciously contracting your core during exercise isn’t necessary, and may in fact get in the way of relaxed, smooth movement. Don’t over think it, just move!

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨
We are always inspired by what people can do, and by celebrating their achievements we hope you will be too!

This month’s inspiring story is Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe, the first person in history to officially complete a marathon in under 2 hours.

On 26th April, Sabastian completed the London Marathon in 1:59:30, beating the previous record of 2:00:28 set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023. This equates to an average speed of 21.17 km/h, or 2:50 per km, continuously for 42.2km.

The 2-hour barrier has long been seen as an impossible feat, but Sawe has demonstrated that with consistency, determination, hard work, and belief, nothing is impossible.
