The Aboriginal Health Conference was held on the weekend of the 15 and 16 August at the Pan Pacific in Perth.

The theme was 'Healing Ourselves, Healing Country, Healing Community', bringing together health professionals, community leaders, and advocates to explore the transformative role of storytelling in Aboriginal health.

'Healing Ourselves, Healing Country, Healing Community' reflected the understanding that healing begins within each of us. When we care for our own wellbeing, we are stronger for our families and communities, and better able to care for Country. Grounded in Aboriginal knowledge systems and connection, the theme recognised the full circle of healing, where healthy individuals strengthen community, strong communities care for Country, and a thriving Country sustains us all.

AHCWA was a Gold Sponsor of the conference and welcomed many of the delegates to the information booth across the two days. We also sponsored the Debarkan Debarkan (going slow) Room.

Yarn with us: Help shape better genetic health access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Data shows that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples access genetic health services less when compared to non-Indigenous Australians. We need to change this to help ‘Close the Gap.’

The Integrated Genetic Healthcare Project aims to create an improved, culturally safe Integrated Genetics care model to improve healthcare experiences and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients accessing genetic health services.

Please join us for a two-hour yarning circle to have a conversation about your views on:

-Health promotion (codesigning media resources about genetic conditions for Community)
-Workforce development (co-designing genetic healthcare training resources for ACCHO personnel)
-Genetic health service access (perspectives on referring Aboriginal patients to GHWA)

Those travelling from outside the local area may be eligible for reimbursement of accommodation costs.

AHCWA is committed to supporting our Member Services in their work with remote communities to address the impacts of Family, Domestic, and Sexual Violence.

Our FDSV Program Coordinator was recently invited by the Ngaangyatjarra Health Service to visit the Ngaanyatjarra Lands to hold a workshop on strengthening their response to violence. One of the highlights was a community bush trip where the whole community came together to have a yarn about the community's needs.

The WA Ear and Hearing Health Forum 2026, hosted by Rural Health West and AHCWA, is taking place on Thursday, 5 and Friday, 6 November 2026, at the Parmelia Hilton Perth. Registrations are now open!

The two-day forum has a focus on Aboriginal ear and hearing health pathways and outcomes and is open to all health professionals and stakeholders with an interest in ear health.

AHCWA is proud to sponsor the Cultural Space at the 16th Australasian Viral Hepatitis Conference, taking place from 12–14 August at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges in Walyalup, Western Australia.

Located in the exhibition area, the Cultural Space features artwork from across the country and provides a welcoming place for delegates to unwind, have a yarn, and try their hand at weaving.

We’re also excited to welcome Mavis Lyndon as this year’s Artist in Residence. Mavis is a 20-year-old Wongi, Yamatji, and Torres Strait Islander artist who has been painting for five years. Her work explores connection and non-judgement, encouraging Aboriginal people to work through feelings of shame, seek support and reconnect with others.

Across the three days of the conference, delegates can watch Mavis bring her artwork to life right beside the Cultural Space. If you’re attending the conference, make sure you stop by, say hello, and spend some time in the space!
