‘Crossing the Bar’ the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson

I love being able to help families find just the right words, poems or readings to honour their loved ones at a memorial service. Sometimes they are modern words and sometimes literary works, such as this beautiful poem from 1889.

In writing her own life story Jan spoke of the dream that she had to fly from a very young age after taking her first flight as a child. Not only did she fulfil that dream and become a hostess with TAA, she was their publicity representative and featured in many types of advertising. We celebrated this and all of the other wonderful stories of Jan’s life at her memorial adding a ‘pre-flight safety run through’ to help set the scene and give the other former hostesses in attendance a chance to smile.
Vale Jan.

Candle lighting traditionally takes all type of forms in funeral and memorial services. I love that these tiny ‘take home’ candles are a beautiful service moment but also a special item for little people to take home after the service, creating further opportunities for conversation, remembering and connections in the home environment. Sometimes both children and adults need a safe place and a conversation starter to ponder what has been and to reshape their thoughts and questions.

On the 9th of May team Whole Heart will be taking on the . I will be walking with a team made up of an incredible group of mums who are walking in memory of their beloved late children. The walk is to be held the day before Mother’s Day and we know it will be tough physically and emotionally. We have felt the love of our communities including Danielle and Dave from Baker’s Delight Highton and the team , who approached us and so kindly offered to help fundraise for our team. Such a generous gesture! All funds raised from the trek go to the Kids+ and Give where you Live foundations. I hope to see you in Highton Village on Saturday for one of those delicious hot cross buns or a sausage for your lunch.

‘Room for an elephant’

Taboos and awkwardness around talking about death and dying can prevent people from being supportive to grieving friends and family. Sadly, this reluctance to mention the ‘elephant in the room’ can result in bereaved people feeling lonely and isolated. ‘Room for an elephant’, which illustrat...
