MILD HYPERBARIC OXYGEN + THE IMMUNE SYSTEM 🫁🧬

What happens inside the body after just one mild hyperbaric oxygen session?

This study investigated 16 healthy young women following a 70-minute exposure to mild hyperbaric oxygen at 1.4 ATA with 35–40% oxygen, compared with a normal-pressure control condition.

The researchers found two particularly interesting changes:

🧠 Parasympathetic activity increased
High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) increased following mild hyperbaric oxygen exposure, suggesting increased parasympathetic nervous system activity.

🧬 Circulating Natural Killer (NK) cells increased
NK-cell numbers increased from approximately 2.28 to 4.44 cells/μL, with the change significantly greater than the control condition.

Natural Killer cells are part of our innate immune system and play an important role in identifying and responding to abnormal or infected cells.

Interestingly, researchers did not find a significant increase in the NK-cell activation marker CD69, or significant changes in the measured oxidative stress and inflammatory markers.

So rather than simply saying “hyperbaric oxygen boosts immunity,” the findings are much more nuanced.

One exposure was associated with changes in autonomic nervous system activity and circulating immune-cell numbers — but this was a small study involving only 16 healthy young women and looked at the acute response to a single session.

More research is needed to understand what these changes mean clinically and whether they persist with repeated exposure.

ELECTRICAL STIMULATION + NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION 🧠⚡

Following a spinal cord injury, communication between the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles can be disrupted — but this doesn’t necessarily mean every neural pathway below the injury has been lost.

This is where electrical stimulation becomes particularly interesting.

Research suggests that electrical stimulation may help increase the excitability of neural pathways and muscles. When stimulation is combined with voluntary movement and task-specific rehabilitation, repeated activation may help drive activity-dependent neuroplasticity.

In simple terms:

⚡ Electrical stimulation
+
🧠 Intent to move
+
🏃 Repeated, task-specific practice

🔄 An environment that may support neural adaptation

The research reviewed a number of approaches, including NMES, functional electrical stimulation (FES), transcutaneous spinal stimulation and epidural stimulation, with reported benefits across areas such as motor function, muscle activation and spasticity.

Importantly, outcomes vary considerably depending on the level and completeness of the spinal cord injury, time since injury, stimulation parameters and rehabilitation being performed alongside it.

For us, one of the most interesting messages is that electrical stimulation doesn’t necessarily need to be viewed as a passive treatment — it can be integrated into active rehabilitation while someone is attempting, practising and relearning movement.

Recovering from a medial knee injury has been a reminder that healing takes time, patience, and the right amount of movement.

In this phase I’m combining gentle, progressive exercise with the Neubie as part of my own rehabilitation. The goal is to keep moving, maintain muscle activation, and gradually build confidence in loading the knee while respecting what it’s ready for.

Every injury is different, and there’s rarely a quick fix. Consistent, well-planned rehabilitation often beats doing too much, too soon.

This reel is simply a look at what’s helping me navigate my own recovery journey.

What is PEMF?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to gently stimulate the body’s cells.

Every cell in your body has an electrical charge. Stress, injury, inflammation, or chronic pain can disrupt this natural communication. PEMF delivers subtle pulses that help restore healthy cellular function and support the body’s natural healing processes.

PEMF may help reduce pain by:

Supporting healthy blood flow and oxygen delivery

Encouraging muscle relaxation

Calming overactive pain signals

Supporting tissue repair after strain or injury

Many people report:

Reduced muscle and joint discomfort

Less stiffness

Improved ease of movement

Supporting Inflammation and Recovery

Inflammation is a normal healing response, but when it becomes persistent it can slow recovery and contribute to ongoing pain.

PEMF may assist by:

Supporting cellular energy (ATP production)

Encouraging circulation and lymphatic flow

Supporting the body’s natural inflammatory balance

Promoting recovery after exercise, injury, or chronic overload

This makes PEMF a helpful adjunct for conditions such as:

Tendon or ligament irritation

Joint pain

Post-exercise soreness

Chronic inflammatory states

In persistent pain conditions, the nervous system can become over-protective. This is known as central sensitisation, where the brain and spinal cord amplify pain signals.

PEMF may support nervous system regulation by:

Encouraging relaxation and parasympathetic (“rest and recover”) activity

Reducing nervous system over-activation

Supporting better sleep and recovery

Helping the body feel safer with movement and rehabilitation

Many patients notice:

A calming effect during sessions

Reduced pain flare-ups over time

Improved tolerance to exercise or daily activity

What to Expect During a Session

You will lie or sit comfortably on a PEMF mat or have an applicator placed over the treatment area

Sessions typically last 20–60 minutes

The treatment is quiet and painless

Many people feel relaxed or even sleepy
