Always checking and re- checking!!

Some of the most experienced nurses have one habit that never really goes away.

They still check.

They still verify.

They still ask.

They still look something up when they’re not sure.

That surprises people sometimes.

After twenty years, shouldn’t you just know?

A lot of the time, they do.

But experience teaches something even more important than confidence.

It teaches respect for how easy it is to be wrong.

The medication looks familiar.

The dose looks familiar.

The order looks almost exactly like one you’ve seen a hundred times.

That’s exactly when autopilot becomes dangerous.

So the experienced nurse pauses.

Looks again.

Calls pharmacy.

Asks another nurse.

Checks the chart.

Not because they’re unsure of themselves.

Because they understand what’s at stake.

Healthcare doesn’t reward guessing.

And the safest people in the building are often the ones least embarrassed to say:

“Let me double-check that.”

There’s a strange myth that expertise means never needing help.

In reality, real expertise often looks like knowing exactly when not to trust your first instinct.

The longer you work in healthcare, the more you realize confidence matters.

But humility keeps patients safe.
