How does back pain impact you?

For many Australian women, back pain is not simply a physical condition. It is adding to an already substantial mental load.

New data from the 'Back Pain In Australia 2026 Spinal Health Survey' shows that among women with back pain, more than half (52.8%) say back pain adds to their daily mental burden, contributing to fatigue, reduced motivation, anxiety, disrupted sleep and reduced quality of life.

Back pain in women should not be dismissed, normalised or managed around. Early intervention and evidence-based care can help address both the physical symptoms and the broader psychological toll of persistent pain and prevent chronic pain.

June is Spinal Health Month, and the Australian Chiropractors Association is encouraging women to get back to feeling good and take back pain seriously. Seek support early and access drug-free, evidence-based healthcare that considers the whole person.

While pain medications may offer temporary relief, research shows opioids do not effectively treat acute low back or neck pain and may even worsen outcomes over time.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends against the routine use of opioids for low back pain, citing limited benefit and potential risks.

Chiropractic healthcare is drug-free, non-invasive and evidence-based. It can form part of a broader biopsychosocial approach to back pain care that considers the physical, psychological and lifestyle factors that influence recovery.

If you are living with back pain, whether recently developed or long-standing, professional assessment and treatment can make a meaningful difference to mobility, quality of life and mental wellbeing.

This feels very relevant to me, having a child with anxiety struggles. The number of our kids with diagnosed anxiety disorder is growing rapidly. What do you think of this approach to building confidence?

Could exposing kids to their fears help them thrive later on in life? Exploring the science of exposure therapy, pediatric psychologist Kathryn Hecht shows how encouraging children to handle discomfort builds confidence and resilience.
